Speed camera warning for those who go to Selsey
« on: 30 October 2009, 17:31:42 »

Due to 3 deaths on the main Chichester to Selsey road this year.Police are using speed cameras which are hidden in wheelie bins and  behind trees now.New camera signs are being erected to replace the old ones.
The 3 people that were run down were a woman in her 60s,a boy of 10 and girl of 15.All the accidents were caused by lorries speeding in 30 and 40 limits .I seems lorries like to speed down our country lanes that were only built for cars.I clocked one myself doing over 50mph last night in a 30 limit.
On this road there are some very tight bends where even car have to slow right down to walking pace.Am not saying all lorry drivers are speeding, cars do as well but a car does not take a football pitch length to stop at 56mph.
The local council are now in talks with the police to make a total lorry ban(anything over 7.5 tonnes) between 19:00 to 07:00 this will affect the whole road from the A27 Chichester/Donnington to Selsey. The main speeders are not the people from Europe but from a well known UK company going to a company called Natures way(Langmeads).
Police and Vosa are also going to start Taco checks on a regular basis in Selsey.
The speed cameras start on 2 November and will be there for a minimum of 3 months to start with.
Before you ask am not anti lorries as my family used to own a international  haulage company with over 30 units,so i grew up with lorries with the likes off ERF,Fode,Scania are in my blood.
Please slow down as i cant even think what it feels like be told my kids were in a fatal accident or even cause the death of another due to speeding, just to get somewhere 2 minutes quicker.

We don't get done for that down here. The local council stick big 30mph limit sticker on some of the bins and ask the people who have these to leave them out. It's quite funny watching a council worker washing the bins by hand so the sign is visible

Tell that to the despatch managers who insist that the driver must be somewhere in the country at a certain time.

...hmmm .... wonder if there is a law preventing you from decorating your wheelie bin with whatever number takes your fancy !!!!!

Better than killing a kid.If the so called dispatch managers can't time a job so the driver has to drive dangerously they shouldn't be doing the job and just remember the typical  manager in the route office is usually a spotty 19 year old  who wouldn't even know how to start a lorry.Remember a "dispatch manager"can also face prosecution for manslaughter if it is found he is partly liable for the accident. I.E forcing a driver to break the law(time, speed,Taco)unrealistic times.
The other thing is if you loss you slot at this place, you only have to wait 15 to 30 minutes longer.that could be part or you 45 minutes rest break you have to take by law.

Think, how would you like a 44 ton lorry travelling at 50mph down a road no bigger than a normal road on a housing estate, with kids play outside am sure you would be one of the first to complain.
We have to put up with this 24/7

Sounds like inappropiate speed.

Please note dogooders this is happening at lowish speeds and not at 100mph +

Lorry ban sounds best case on this road.

And don't piss about with speed cameras - use a Police man and do it properly

OK i'm no goody, goody like everyone now and then when the motorways are clear i sometime put my foot down. What you have to remembers and some of you who come down camping  here is the road has always got a coating of mud on them due to the tractors and with the tractors they spill diesel, liquid fertiliser all over the place,so even on a dry day the road can be slippery.
All am telling you be it in a car, lorry, motorbike, electric wheelchair(hit and run all the time) if you speed on the road down here from the 2nd,you will get nicked and the local magistrate is very anti speed and i don't blame him,his wife was killed on this road 2 years ago by a speeding lorry.

Nor am I - I have been clocked at 3 figure speeds on DCs and got away with 3 points. 01:00 A40 1993 tuned Sunbeam

But a road like this - I can imagine it from your description - crack down on the idiots - I am not mentioning speeding at all, this is dangerous driving.

I skidded on the way home tonight and skidded into the car in front at very low speeds (no damage).

No oil, but road was very slippery, ABS went mad.

I wonder if it would have stopped better with no ABS.

This was just road grease and I was not bombing.

A good reminder ot be careful
