OK, I admit it.  I read what some call 'trashy novelettes' by authors such as Len Deighton, Leslie Thomas, Jeffrey Archer et al, regarding 'war' in the shape of Napoleonic, WW1/2 and other conflicts.  And I re-read them, years later, if I enjoyed them particularly.  Must be somethign to do with being stuck on ships all those years ago!

Anyhow, to task to hand.

Read a book years ago - a novel - based on the real practice landings for D-day on Septon Sands in Devon in which many many personel lost their lives but was a rapid learning curve for the forthcoming landings in Normandy shortly thereafter as regards the logistics of the whole thing.

But I'm begarred if I can recall the name of the book or the author.

Anyone any idea?  Think it was a 'known name' so to speak, but I've tried googling assorted permutations and nothing thus far.  Anyone any clues?

sorry can't help, not read many WW1/2 books. Guess i should really. Reading listening to Dan Browns new book on the way to work at the moment, thats quite good.

more tedious than most story books...

I don't like all of them, Deception Point was good, can see that being made into a film. Actually read that one  ;D

It is Slapton sands.  A place nearto me is Septon, hence the confuddlement....   :-[

I was on holiday down there with the wife 16 yrs ago, beautiful part of the world, warm & sunny etc. we got talking to a chap running the beachside cafe and he mistook us for Americans (i'm a Plumber from Hartlepool for gawds sake! :D) Anyway he took us to a small village   about a mile or so inland that had been taken over by the WD and evacuated and showed us the spot they had temporarily buried over 400 dead G.I's after they had been washed ashore at Slapton. He also told us his mate, who was a diver cum salvage man had found 'swimming' Sherman tanks on the seabed just offshore, some with the crews still on board!!! :( I believe this bloke has since salvaged an empty tank from the sea and set it up as a permanent memorial? A lot of men & war materiel was lost, not the least of which was the two large LST's torpedoed & sunk by E-Boats on that fateful night. Kind of brings Remembrance Day into sharp focus  :(
