So..what do you think?
« on: 18 November 2009, 12:55:56 »

Starting new thread as dont want to hijack another.....Having just watched Holtenders clip and thread it begs the BIG question.............ARE WE ALONE??? :-/
In my opinion...we  CANT be. There MUST be other "life" out there?
They're discovering new planets/galaxys/ universes all the time. The law of averages says we cant be alone. So wise people of OOF....whats your thoughts on this?

IMHO it's incredibly arrogant for us to assume we are alone in the universe... Ther must be something/someone else out there :y :y

I agree, using the laws of probability it is highly unlikely 'we' are the only intelligent (and I use that term very loosely for the vast majority of humanity) life in the vast expanse of space. Perhaps they know we're here but are to disgusted in how we run our planet to even bother talking to us ;D ;D

I would like to think there is other life out there.Imagine if in the whole universe there is just our little insignificant planet that sustains life.
Our own galaxy is 10's of thousand of light years across, just this 1 galaxy and there are probably billions of others out there so like you say law of averages and probability indicate there should be other life forms.
The chances of discovery though are infinitessimaly small, we've only been producing elctromagnetic waves for a 100 years or so, so even our intelligent proof of life hasn't even gotten out the back yard so to speak let alone into the vast reaches of space to be discovered by a sufficiently advance life form able to measure and interpret it.
I feel really small now.

A great question Cam - if we're not alone in this universe we certainly deserve to be ;)

Good sense must suggest however that it's reasonable to suspect other forms of life - sentient or otherwise - to be abound in the vastness of space.

Relativity places a limit on the speed at which we can travel.  I seem to remember that it also limits the speed at which information can be transferred.  And the nearest places where we are likely to encounter other beings are quite a long way away. :(

But that's not the problem.  The universe is believed to be about 14 billion years old.  Humanity has been around for a mere 10,000 years or so.  Even if we endure in recognisable form for another 100,000 years (unlikely), and assume that that is about average for a race history, that is such a tiny fraction of the history of the universe that we probably wouldn't be noticed.  We'd have to exist simultaneously with a race of similar technology which is sufficiently near to us to communicate in some way. :(

I use the word "race" to avoid using the word "civilisation".  :)

Of course, relativity is probably not the whole story.  No theory ever is. :) :)

Agreed Paul and lets face it, look at the diversity of different forms of life on our own planet, so as you say, it would be arrogant to think no life in any form exists elsewhere in the universe. At the moment, we still know less about what lives in the depths of our own oceans than we know about space.
