Puppy training help please.........!!!!!
« on: 22 November 2009, 13:52:35 »

Hi all

Coco, our cross (inter?) bred pup is now 4 months old and has got the paper training down to a tee.......

Does anyone know please what is the next step towards getting her to do her business outdoors.....??

We seemed to have reached a plateau now with the toilet training and are fed up clearing paper away all day long.....

She gets regular walks, and we have a garden which is large and a mixture of lawn, patio, gravel and paths

Any advice greatly appreciated.....!!

Cheers

Martyn

Now you have to move the papers outside the door and make sure that she knows were they are. Still expect a few misshaps it won't happen overnight, Its important not to over react if she has an accident. When she lets you know she wants to go outside and performs give her bags of praise. It wont take to long before she gets the hang of it.

As tunnie says, but that's only any good if it's windy or raining. Spread some her sent (her wee & poo)on your lawn area. I know it sounds a bit disgusting, but it works. They are easily fooled into thinking that's were they go. You must praise her with a treat when she does her business & lots of encouragement.
They need alot of patients & some more than other's.

Let Coco go out often if does the business give a small reward and praise.

Ps. My vet told me my puppy should only have short walks due to bones being soft - problems in later life ???? How this works ok in real world ???

As said really. Let her out before she asks & encourage her with whatever words you use for a wee etc. Lot's of fuss when she does & if she slips up just ignore it. If you scold her she won't understand why which won't help either of you. Wiping the dirty paper outside could help, i had'nt thought of that but it makes sense. Past experiece has taught me that letting them out often & going with them results in them wanting to go eventually then lavish praise on them.
Never rub thier nose in it, they don't understand, you would'nt rub your babies nose in it's nappy. I hate people who do this to the point i want to stuff thier face in & see how they like it.
Patience & encouragement should suffice. :y

This is what we have used for over 19 years of breeding Rotties.
Make the paper pee patch smaller each day, moving it closer to the back door at the same time.Put 1 sheet outside the back door held down with stones if ness again make to paper patch smaller each day.Remove all paper from in doors. This seemed to work for us.With our Rotties(42 over the years) this took anything from 2 days to a week(bitches seem quicker to learn) but all depends how thick or stubborn the dog breed is.Remember a dog will go back to the patch in doors due to the smell left if not fully cleansed of scent.

As you have gone down this route, you will have to continue, as others have advised.
I used a different approach will Holly dog, which worked....
At night, she was shut in the kitchen, and i just cleaned any mess up in the morning...she didnt get told off.
However before i went to bed i took her outside and waited to see if she would perform, if she did she gots loads of praise.
During the day, if i caught her going to the toilet in doors, i would tell her off (if you tell them off in the act, they do know why they are being told off) and would pick her up and put her outside, shutting the back door for 10 mins. They dont like this, as there on there own. Then i used to let her back in the house.

It took Holly dog about 2 weeks to learn, going outside was the best place to go  :y

Teaching her to stop chewing everything in sight took a tad longer...about 6 months  ;D
Mobile phones, remote controls, plastic containers all took the Holly puppy treatment  ::) ;D
