CPU Cooler update
« on: 16 March 2007, 23:12:29 »

As some of might have read last week i was asking about the best cpu cooler i could buy to replace my noisy stock cooler.

Guess what!! I bought one, Its an Artic cooler freezer 7 pro.

You know whats coming next.

Its just as bloody noisy.. It cools the cpu about 10 degrees cooler. Its cooled the case and my bloody legs in fact the whole kitchens freezing. Me the computer even the computer desk are all suffering from hyperthermia.

Now apart from putting earplugs in it needs to be quieter a lot quieter any thoughts.

A fan speed controller comes to mind but i have a 4 pin plug and cpu cooler is controlled by pwm signal.
Dont i sound like i know what im talking about..Well if i did i would be asking for advice so if any of you know if i can use a fan speed controller on this fan point me in the right direction please.

I dont have the choice of slowing down the fan in the bios.

I will say this new cooler is amazing and its got a bloody 6 year gaurantee but i will be a block of ice by then or should i say a deaf block of ice... Think hard all you knowledgable computer buffs and help the aged.

Thanks in advance. :-/

Weird. I have never come across a noisy CPU fan. Plenty of noisy case fans and PSU fans though.

You certain it is the CPU fan making all the noise?

Hi Laidback66
Yes its the cpu fan...Whooshing in my ears all the time.

I need to slow the rpm down it will still run cool enough if i cut the revs in half i beleive.

Ive tried software but it does not work. I would have thought theres a command i could alter but dont know where to find it.

sometimes in the bios there's an option to enable fan speed control.

zalman Flower cooler is quite effective and silent... for hotter processors a slow speed large diameter case fan is usually all that's required to get the Zalman to cool enough.....

also consider heatpipe systems

http://www.quietpc.com

I have to build Silent PC's from time to time for studio clients....   where the PC MUST be as quiet as a dead silent thing...  or it'll be on the vocal recordings....

it's all about airflow and heat dissipation....  it IS possible to have a completely silent PC, with enough grunt to do absolutely anything on...

what it's NOT is cheap/.

I've found Zalman stuff to be unreliable...

Can you try a standard cooler resistor to slow it...?

I would if i could but im afriad i would need a little help on sorting that.. If you know what i need i will certainly try it..Im cooling my Guinness in front of the computer from now on.. Even my blank cd s need overcoats before going in the disk drive. It works a treat but too noisy so yes by slowing down the rpm should sort it.

You can buy them. I think Craplins do them if you have one nearby...

I've found Speedfan to only work with a very small number of boards. Many boards don't have the hardware to control fan speed anyway.

Yes thats what i found..Never mind i shall get it sorted i hope even if i have to build a new base unit.. Im becoming used to the cold leg syndrome can move the base unit which is a shame, i was thinking of putting it in next doors house it wouldnt annoy us then, just need some walkie talkies for when i need a disk put in the drive. :y

how could a passive heat exchanging blade array be "unreliable"

;)

I use their heat sinks, and cases, but very little else...  as passive devices, reliability isn't really much of an issue.

I was referring to their fans, but also had issues with the machining quality of their copper heatsinks...

Called in to Maplins today.
They had fan speed controllers but were for a 3 pin fan. Also had resistor leads for 3 pin fans.

They did not have 4 pin to 3 pin leads..So the next step is to build or buy a barebones system thats silent..Dont want to spend much money so if any of you have done the same let me know what you bought..I dont need the fastest as i dont play games just internet.
