Personally I would never judge someone's wealth by the car they drive. I no a millionaire who drives a 1988 cavalier estate, and his wife a 1980 golf cabrio.
I am more inclined to believe people who drive flash things like subaru and bmw are the poor people, because they are so unhappy with there position in life they have to drive down the road trying to imprees people they don't no and probably never will no, and have put themselves in debt for it aswell.

my 2.2 really is feeling good on these long motorway runs, sure its not got the pace of the V6, but bang on the cruise at 80, and its silent, smooooooth, comfy, VERY comfy.

Lets look at the other options of big RWD motors. I am 6ft4 so i don't fit well in an Astra.

BMW 5/7's - I like the new 5's but would need to spend 7-10k on the one i want. It will only depreciate in value.

Rover 75 V8 - I like the idea, but i don't have my own BP account 

Merc E/S Class - I may drive old man cars but not that old yet, besides Omega is more reliable.

Audi A8 - Nice, very nice cars, but even i would struggle to afford to pay the bills 

300C - Nice big fat American car, good possible replacement for the Omega, but not yet, value is still on free-fall, another 2-4 years yet.

Honda Ledgend (latest shape) same as above

The Omega (even a 4 pot) is hard to beat, i paid 2.7k for it over 4 years ago, it just happens to be worth 750 quid now

i think someone would have to really know their stuff to look for a power sounder on the Omega, if you have a smash, are they really going to try and get the scuttle off to check its there?  :-/

If its nicked, you won't be getting it back anyway. Removal is the best option IMO.

Omegas are worthless and no one wants to steal them, if scumbag wants to get to his crack house, he will steal a 1995 Fiesta, much easier.

If a second scumbag wants to steal to sell on, no way will he pick an Omega, he will go next door for that BMW. 

Insurance assessors can be a PITA

Cut off the lead for the sounder at the base of the loom, seal with black insulating tape. No one will notice, if you have a front or rear end smash they are not going to be interested in the alarm.

If the company involved doesn't want to pay out (and let's face it, I can't think of one that does pay willingly), then you can bet your 'dangle berries' that once they see a wire to the alarm system has been cut (and yes, you can see that AFTER a fire), then your insurance could well be null & void (on the basis you told them the car had a completely standard factory alarm that hasn't been modded).

Ultimately its not about the money its a heads up as to what can happen to your car, I wouldn't have expected it to catch fire after being stood for 24 hours. It's a cautionary tale!

Agreed.  Irrespective of the ins and outs of what you could/should/dont do after the event, its worthwhile to check and see if the sounder gubbins is spewing its puddens inside and isolate/replace, if possible, to avoid the very situation you ended up in LJay/Jimbob......

Looking at the state of the battery, its possible it could have caught fire whilst on the road 

Main thing everyone is safe 

I still find it difficult to believe a removed power sounder would be noticed, its up to them to prove you did it as well. Whats to stop you saying you bought it that way?
