the M4. Shut? or just heavy traffic?
« on: 21 December 2009, 21:05:54 »

Does anyone know the driving conditions on the m4 as of about 8pm. Between 6 and 10 west bound?

due to finish my late shift at 10pm here in Slough.

Those that left here at 5 have come back saying they cant get home due traffic on the m4 caused by heavy snow in the Reading area. Some are working on, some are getting the train from Slough to head west.

I may just do another 8 hours and work until 6am to save coming back in tomorrow. Depends.

Anyone? Ta. :-)

Heard a lot of tales of woe on a ham radio repeater in Reading tonight. Shame I was not on OOF as I could have got an update for you. A329 total carnage at that time, and spilling onto the M4 at the junctions apparently. I think someone was m oving, albeit slowly, Westbound on the M4.

If you're still there I'll ask the question?

thanks guys. :-)

i'm still at work Kev, decided to work on but any info would be of use.

I get the impression the m4 is clearing now the 329 has freed up, but the back log is still affecting back to junction 8/9 at maidenhead. Back roads are free er but not gritted. Alot of abandoned cars blocking the Reading area and the Mrs tells me its snowing again although the temp is now plus 1o c.

Trouble is i only have me phone and alot of the weather sites dont work on it. The Network was busy for hours, couldn't ring out. Mare!

Aaah. Stuck in Slough. What could be worse. ;D

just got in. Can of beer and a pack of dry roasted. Still in "just finished work mode" like ya do. My brain still thinks its 10.30 last night. It has not noticed i've done 16 hours straight.

Interesting drive home. Must have been 50 odd abandoned lorrys(or maybe kipping drivers?) and 60 or 70 odd cars left on the side of the road and on the hard shoulder. Some in very awkwarde places. Slush on the white lines on the m4, 329 down to one lane and local roads are covered in compact snow which is now melting in places. Must have 5 or 6 inches on top of what was lying around.

5 or 6 inches. Doesnt sound like much does it? How ridiculous. Some of our neighbours took 5 hours to cross town. 20 minute journey normally.

Glad you got home ok! You made the right move there by staying on at work.

I left my snow covered village at 5am this morning to do my xmas shop and even the 4x4 struggled on some of the hills - can usually get going ok it's just stopping the damn thing  ;D  Was the only person shopping in the supermarket though  :y

I saw the tail end of the M4 last night Chris, it took me 3 hours, to get from Heathrow to Becaonsfield Services, i as was lucky to get in and a car parking space.

It was completely f*ing pathetic, light dusting and chaos, M40 was doing no faster than 5mph all the way. I got out and tried to get a hotel at the sevices, was full, apparently local ones could have filled it 10 times over.

Some twonk in transit decided to drive over a round about, guess how that ended  ::)

It was total grid lock, utter and complete nothing was moving. Mainly due i could see to the 2" slush everywere.

2 trucks got stuck at the exit to the services, which fcked everything. Comming into the services a bus came in too hot and stuffed his nose in the roundabout just behind the transit, cars then went around the wrong way, so did a truck but the turn was too tight, guess what happen when he tried to back up!

I walked to Beaconsfield itself, all the hotels full  >:(

On the up side found a pub  ;D

Walking back (its about midnight now) M40 was flowing fairly free, (40ish mph) getting out of the services was fun, but stopped off to tank up for some extra traction, and managed to get out and home, got in at 2AM, after leaving at 6pm  :(

Took me 30 mins from the slip road to get to the services...

This was the main problem, the roads were just not clear, traction was almost impossible for everyone....
