Car just come back on transporter
« on: 25 December 2009, 21:36:01 »

Well what a great end to a relatively nice day. Car decided to  start making a nasty bearing grumbling noise from the front of the engine, not sure if it's the serpentine or more seriously the timing belt. Erred on the side of caution and got breakdown out.  Tried a little bit of leap wd40 on alt pulley tensioner and that seems to have cured it. So will hopefully investigate further tomorrow on daylight hours.  Timing belt was done by vx and not completed it's 40000 or 4 years, if belt tensioner was to disintegrate could I claim on their warranty.
All help appreciated and btw merry Xmas my fellow oofers  :)

Very prudent; much better to recover it, than continuing-on and it throwing a belt. :y

My thoughts exactly debs. Still not sure what pulley it is. Especially as the grumble has now dissappeared after a quick squirt of the dreaded wd40. Still tomorrow brings another day.  :y
weird thing though recovery driver wanted to know if I'd been drinking just in case I wanted a free lift home, amazing what people will do to get a free taxi.

Had a couple of free rides over the years.

Both with the yank cars.   Once threw a fan belt and they had nothing big enough to refit it, so got a lift home from cleethorpes.

Same car had a blow out in sheffild, never carried the spare wheel (was the 80's tho) had 225/70/15 on the front and 275's on the rear, told them the spare wouldnt fit in the boot, they either had to take me collect the spare or take me to a tyre dealer, they couldnt find one that sold BFG's so annother taxi home.

Never thought about abusing the recovery service by doing something on purpose though, but I bet some do.

Hopefully its the aux tensioner and nowt else too serious...

A wee story...

A Freelander2 was recovered back to our dealership by the AA this last week with the diagnosis - siezed engine....

As it was being pushed into the workshop later in the day, the chap steering pushed the start button and it span like a good 'un, but not starting.

Not too siezed, think we...

Fuel guage reads half tank plus...

You catching on yet?

Tech removed the fuel pipe - no supply.

Puts a couple of cans of diesel into it, bleeds it through, and first crank of the engine, it fires up....

How did the AA fella fck up?  The owner churned the guts out the battery trying to start it without fuel - duff sender - and the AA chap didn't know or couldn't be bothered to check for fuel supply after (not) switching the lights on to see if they dimmed when starting.  They carry jump leads, don't they??

Owner happy to pay for a couple of gallons of diesel and a new sender on a warranty...

Sometimes, it is worth looking on the brighter side!   :y

This is what happened the last time I was "relayed" home:

A few years back, the fuel pump fell off my Granada and I was dragging it along for a mile or so before I realised that there was a bit of a funny noise coming from somewhere.  I eventually stopped at a petrol station (not a good idea in retrospect) and had a look underneath.  No mobile signal, so asked in shop if I could call the AA from there.  Attendant heard my description of the fault, and immediately called the fire brigade, who came along and hosed down the entire forecourt.  Didn't actually lose any fuel.

Gives me the willies just thinking about it now.  Could have gone up like a bomb if it had leaked and caught a spark.

I don't think they even (want to) look these days, they just want to relay/recover the car & get on with the next call out.  :-X
