Intelligence Quotient.
« on: 27 December 2009, 11:32:08 »

Does anyone here at OOF ........have a high I.Q.
On a good day ......I can get mine to reach double figures. ;D ;D
Rumour has it .....that the mighty Ms Debs has a four figure I.Q......Zulu also.. ;) ;)
Is I.Q. a realistic indicator of intelligence....or is it too simplistic?.
Perhaps intelligence takes many different forms ....
Any ideas?. :y :y

IQ scores don't mean much in real life because the test only measures certain skills (and even then, very misleading results can be produced).

A lot of things are obvious in life when pointed out, but that doesn't mean the person who failed to spot it is lacking in grey matter......that's why the IQ test is flawed IMO.

My IQ has been "officially" measured twice in my life --- at 7 and around 36, both by Mensa in supervised tests. Can't recall the scores now that the alzheimers has set in, but both times I qualified for membership. However, I would say that the emphasis on IQ is flawed, as are the testing methods.

Yes, I, apparently, have a reasonable quotient, but was (and am) sadly lacking in "application" (basically a lazy.B  ;D ), therefore the scores meant absolutely zilch as to my worth.

People who score far lower, but apply themselves to whatever their endeavours might be, have done far better in life.

"Intelligence", even if measured effectively, is a minute fraction of the picture.

My son, who has aspergers, attained a really high score when he sat an IQ test. But, as has been said, the way he looks at life would prevent him from any practical application of it. He thinks numbers are 'alive' and when numbers jacks is on the telly he sits and mouths the words with them.

I think you may have something here...
I was once told that the three main elements of intelligence are...... at number 3.Memory...2.Understanding..and right at the top 1.Application of understanding. :y :y

Our eldest (autistic) was tested when he turned 12, and he scored 127 which apparently puts him in the "very superior" intelligence class.
Yet he still can't work out what clothing is appropiate just before he walks out of the door (ie, he would go out today in a t-shirt and not realise he won't make it 2 minutes up the road).

By all accounts, it is not uncommon for those with mental health issues to reach higher scores than average.
