Broadband comes to the Sticks of Spain. Yippee
« on: 29 December 2009, 17:31:32 »

Having had broadband in the Uk literally from when it was invented, it was a shock to go back to dial up in Spain. I thought, wrongly, one day we would get it in the country but bearing in mind that Telefonica (BT equivaent) doesn't even have phone lines in our village ADSL,Cable were right out. Satellite costs a fortune and the WiFi solution doesn't make it over the crest of the nearest hill.

After a load of messing about trying to establish if a 3G dongle modem would work from the less than helpful Vodaphone and Telefonica(O2) peeps, the Orange guy said he would test it at our house. Result. Now have 845k down and 70 up on a less than perfect day albeit for the going rate of 45 euros a month.
I currently have the dongle on the end of a 5 metre USB cable to "improve" the signal.

Has anyone any tips for getting a better signal apart from going outdoors! Would a PCI USB2.0 card help? Onspeed?

Now any suggestions for preferably free music download sites?

A well chuffed varche

Brilliant news! :y

.....I wonder if it`d be possible to improve the gain of the dongle by turning it into a directional "cantenna" (as can be done for WiFi frequencies).....do you know the direction/distance of the nearest 3G comms-mast?....is it line of sight?

DIY "cantenna" (albeit, for a different frequency band): http://www.turnpoint.net/wireless/cantennahowto.html

Good site Debs, I wonder if one of his links,  http://people.wallawalla.edu/~Rob.Frohne/Airport/Primestar/Primestar.html would be easier. It uses a sat dish to capture a wide area and focuses it at the sensor, in this case it would be the dongle.

Excellent. That will keep me busy. have got it up to 1300 down and 300 up now. Not sure about having my spare 80 cm sat dish inside though. I hope it isn't possible to fry the dongle!

Just getting back on Skype now. Haven't used that for over 6 years.

I had dial up before broadband as they could not go straight from ISDN.

My BB is crap - too far from the exchange 2.7 down at best. Poor latency, not overly impressed.

Model was horrible.

ISDN was quite fun as there was very little latency.
