They don't actually need a lot of exercise.  I used to share a house with someone who owned a Great Dane.  He was wonderful, except when he wanted to sit on your lap.  Took him for a walk one day, went round a corner and came across an Irish Wolfhound.  Our dog was absolutely dumbfounded, never having previously encountered a canine larger than himself.  Took him weeks to get his self-confidence back.
