Backing Tracks. You can play along to the backing track, on the computer or on a cd. There are 1000's available free on the internet.
You can get backing tracks minus most instruments, i.e. guitar bass and drums, so you can play your chosen instrument to fill in the missing part, or complete instrumental backing tracks to sing to.

Impressive technique.  What's he actually doing - is there a sort of karaoke style backing that he can just put the lead guitar onto?
Obviously not his arrangement - do I gather it's called Cannon Rock by someone called Matt Rach?
Correct. :y

Wow!!!

I never knew about that.  Just had a browse around.  Its unbelievable what you can get.  Think I may well take up the guitar again (arthritis permitting) when I finally admit that I'm never going to get another job and give in to retirement!

There's probably an ASBO coming my way, if the wife doesn't strangle me first :) :) :)

I do change my mind on the subject almost daily though,so it depends what day you catch me on. ::)
If I ever buy another it will either be a Clapton strat or a Les Paul, but then we are getting into 4 figures.

I treated myself to a Line6 pocket pod last year and if youre thinking of picking up an electric guitar again I thoroughly recommend that you check it out. For about £60 it has a range of preset effects that match different styles and well known songs (plus you can access a whole load more) and you can also create your own. The best bit however is that you dont need an amp so its ideal if you dont want to annoy others who arent similarly minded in the appreciation of overloud overdriven guitars! Simply plug in your guitar and your headphones and youre away. Theres also an imput for your CD player or PC/MP3 so you can jam along to your favourite tracks. I'm currently teaching a couple of the guys in our road to play and the free tabs available on the net these days (whilst you have to be a bit selective about accuracy)makes it so much easier for new players these days to progress than it used to be.Seriously , check out the Line6 website for a demo of what it can do. Not a lot of small music retailers do them but I found Dolphin Music online very good :y

Looks a good site Ken. I joined Guitar Tricks briefly and whilst there was some good stuff on there, overall I found it  disappointing even though it was considerably cheaper than the Licks Library site. If money is an issue theres still a lot of freebie stuff available on youtube, its just that you have to wade through so much crap to find it!Like learning anything however none of the stuff on the net/DVDs etc ,valuable as they are, are really a substitute for a good teacher but I appreciate that for many of us-myself included-lack of money/time is a big factor. The main thing is that you have fun learning and the guitar is a great instrument to play :y

Thanks for the advice, but I'm more or less a beginner, I suppose.  I studied classical guitar for a few years, but that was 40-odd years ago, and I haven't done much since.  On the other hand, there's a cheap solid-body electric guitar and practice amp up in my loft, as none of my kids ever developed any musical talent.

So maybe I'll have a go at some point, but it won't be for while yet.  And I'm more likely to have a go at old Shadows or Ventures stuff than anything significantly more modern.

And definitely in the privacy of my own bedroom!   :) :) :)
