In Liverpool, yesterday afternoon at 3pm, the buses stopped running. Kids were at school, people were at work, shoppers were out and about. Chaos.
So what did the community-spirited taxi drivers of Liverpool do? Started charging double fare.
They are always moaning that there are too many cabs being licensed for them to make money. Good. Bastards.

I normally take a pretty hard line on this sort of stuff as well but if the conditions are pretty dire and journeys much longer then there could be earnings issues - i.e. if it was your business would you adjust to special conditions. If conditions were good and the Liverpool guys were just milking then I would agree with you

The other thing is comparing taxi rates between areas.
I used a taxi in Ashton Under Lyne on 1st Jan and was told it was double tariff - went about 4-5 miles and got a bill for £7.30 which compared to down here in Sandhurst is bloody cheap. Seems to be £15 wherever you go.

I paid £14 for a 2 mile journey on Christmas Day, that was in Ormskirk. Taxi driver was a bit poxed off when he got no tip.

Rotherham taxis used to double thier fars for xmas and new year, 2008 rotherham night life was dead over the xmas and new years eve party time, this year one company vowed to keep fares as normal and appaarently town was packed with revelers this year.  Other taxi companies reported a slow trade.

I remembered a bad story from past ..

many years ago when small cousins (two of them) were with me in a far place a sudden heavy rain started (like somebodies flushing the bucket down your head).. All busses and taxis were full .. finally I managed to stop one.. he asked where we want to go..and find the distance not enough and let us outside..

Yep fully agree with the above. Every single one takes the piss in Chelmsford. Each time they try to take the longer way through the town rather than the bypass (adds about £7 on).

Every single poxy time I have to take a taxi from the station  There is another bit as well that taxi's and buses are allowed down that knocks 5mins off the journey, every time I have to correct them again. They claim innocence

are you talking hackney carriage or private hire?, hackneys are governed by the local council & therefore are told at what rates per mile they work on as well as when they can charge time & a half or double etc, but as far as im aware the weather doesnt make any difference, so if it was a hackney i would have quieried it, but if it was private hire they can basically charge what they like.

Not strictly true where i come from. I owned my own hackney taxi company for 5 years, the council here has a minimum and maximum level we are allowed to operate within, but the scale is quite wide. So, for instance, one company could charge say,£2.80 for their minimum fare (2mile trip)..and another company can charge £3.80 for the same trip.

As far as upping the price at christmas ect, many companys here double the fares...why anyone still uses them i dont know. Me?....I used to keep the fare the exact same as any other time of year, but only for my regular customers, if they were good enough to use me all tear, i wasnt gonna rip them off at holiday time. If the passenger wasnt a regular, i added an extra £1. Found i got a few more regular customers after they realised i wasnt a rip off merchant.

i normally get a cab just round the corner and do a runner through the alleyway. no charge.

If drivers are deliberately taking you a longer way to get more money on a fare complain to the council, the Taxi licencing man can have the drivers licence if they do that.

Personally, I don't blame them, they should have went home aswell when the buses stopped running , Anyway is'nt Liverpool the rich part of the country
