To the best of my knowledge you will not be entitled to pay unless you are given the opportunity and want to take it as part of your holiday entitlement

It seems it's a grey area... I made the effort (actually spent half the day there before saying I was leaving to ensure I didn't get stuck) so am entitled (and being paid anyway!) but it's tomorrow I'm looking at. I'll probably get in but I'm not having another day like today :y :y

Is a days pay worth crunching the Omega for?

I thought not, but luckily can opt to work in the branch nearest home and walk in, leaving the car safely on the drive.

If I could not do this and would not get paid, I would take holiday instead, rather than risk the car or injury...

Not bothered about the days pay TBH... Just the principle ::) ::)

Did the local radio say "dont travel unless its absolutely essential" - a lot of poeple where I work have used this as an excuse to not attend - and I have to agree as the ones that did make it in didnt actually do much apart from look out at the snow and speculate on weather and swap snow driving stories!

I pinch the wife's car in this weather as its 4 wheel drive - but if I only had the Omega then I wouldnt even attempt to leave the driveway.

seek legal advice if they dont pay you, your boss sounds like a victorian mill owner and completely unconcerned with your welfare and well being, he must have been snowed in when they had the "motivating staff" course :)

As above... my boss was fine as soon as he realised I wasn't asking and agreed that I should leave.

As for tomorrow... We'll just wait and see what morning brings. We've had about 4-5" today and it's still snowing hard :o :o I'll still get up at 05:15 and have a look out, if I don't need a shovel I'll have a try and see what the roads are like :y :y

Been on the News today, lots of companies do not pay if you do not go in, Supermarkets in particular.  They will however let you take a day's leave or make up the hours lost during the rest of the month.

Well... I can't see me going in early doors. This is the end of the road onto the main heath road and reasonably sheltered taken about an hour ago

It's taken on a phone so the quality isn't all that but there's been another couple of inches since then! That's a "main" heath road and sheltered... Further up it's gonna be drifting!

Went for a quick wander and the snow is comfortably 8" to the compacted stuff now... Goes to the top of Mrs LD's boots :o :o :o

6" basically settled in 3 hours

 and it's still going :o :o :o

If I wasn't too lazy to clear the car I'd be down in the car park at the end of the road ::) ::) ::)

Pictures will follow tomorrow... Assuming I'm not at work ;) ;)

It's still coming down and, at the end of the day, we can't do any work anyway ::) ::)

Trouble is, under that there's another 3" of compacted snow/ice and too many numpties can't drive... Been at least 2 accidents at that exact spot yesterday ::) ::) ::)

I'll take a view in the morning but not going to bust a gut!

And on that note I'd better go to bed... Getting up in just over 5 hours ;) ;)

I was kind of jesting, doing the same here, watching it come down, will make the decision in the morning if going to go in or not, 14 miles for me, but can stay in the office once I get there.... ::)

My understanding  (wife is management for Wilkinsons, and a mate is an employment lawyer at Wragge,)   there is NO legal obligation for employers to pay staff who don't turn up , for whatever reason...  unless  the circumstances specifically catered for within the terms of their contract.    Sickness is covered by contracts and by law, but inclement weather often is not...

i believe they cannot fire you for being snowed in i think....  not without a dead cert tribunal loss for unfair dismissal. and probable compensatipn...   but they don;t have to pay you either.

some companies will....  as a goodwill gesture perhaps, but it's not as common as you'd hope...

and as for the self employed like me...   i'm screwed.//   it's already cost me over a grand in turn over.

there goes the new omega this month for sure....   car fund now put aside to cover the likelyhood of a very poor month....  as we're forecast bad weather and arctic conditions for the next 2 weeks.

Well... Got up, cleared the car (40 minutes :o :o) and called work partway through clearing... Not worked now for over 50 hours and planning to start today (exactly the same as said yesterday ::) ::)) so told them I'd have a go but would be late.

So started off... Car was bellying out on the way down the road and struggling to keep moving... Got to the "main road" pictured above... Slithered my way out and into motion, got to the A12, the main trunk road and was fighting to keep it moving and in a straight line even with snowflake and TC on so turned around and came home. Took me over an hour to do about 20 miles. :o :o

Rang back and spoke to the Labour Controllers (as opposed to the manager from another shift earlier) who agreed I'd be foolish to try and get in. My concern was more that I'd get snowed out, in all honesty, especially as they still can't work! Left it that I'd keep an eye and perhaps have another go later :y :y :y

Supposed to be in tomorrow night but, TBH, if we get more than an inch of snow today I won't be going anywhere ::) ::) Due to start again soon and drop almost as much as last night!

Very wise...

Started trying to get the car off the drive at 0750hrs, just got in-had puncture from sharp screw in the snow.

I live only half a mile away from work, told I had to bring car for appointments, but only just got in...

Got moaned at.

Wish I had not bothered  >:(

LD as said most employers do not have to pay if you don't make it in to work, but may well allow you to make up the time in the future.  As I know your not office based you certainly can't work from home (unless you have a great big crane in your back garden - which from memory you haven't  :P).  Anyway stop being so fussy and get back to work ;D.

I made it in from home, then again most of my roads are main and roads on the side have been quite fun 8-)

Everyone should try being self employed for a year or so then lets see how many don't make it in to work. No work no pay simple.
