Conditions - how to get out on cheap

My area is like an ice rink and particularly my drive and the immediate roads. Last night had booking at local indian - rang and said we could not make it unless owner picked us up and some friends in his X5. He did and took us all home - result. We bought some decent drinks to achieve a fair balance - better buying drink than spending on taxi
