is it worth it? and if so......
« on: 15 January 2010, 23:07:45 »

Been thinking of renewing my mobile, currently on pay as you go, but was thinking of getting a contract so i can get a free laptop. Probably through carfone warehouse.
Has anyone done this and if so what laptop did you get ..spec ect, what was the deal and do you reckon its worth it?

I wouldn't touch that company with a bargepole due to my previous experiences with them  :o :o

As for the laptop... It's a freebie so not going to be that special ::) :y

In truth, in anything ever free.

There's allways the small print that you never read till it's too late.

The price you pay for your contract phone is worth more than the laptop is so the money you are spending could buy you a laptop of higher spec than they are giving away plus get a new payg phone in for the price.

the only deals ive seen like that are for 24 months, thats a long time to be tied in for a laptop that in the 1st year will be outdated and not a great spec to start with plus the cost of using yer phone

With very, very few exceptions you get what you pay for. Nobody gives you something for nothing, it's all loaded in the price. I would treat these offers with EXTREME caution!

The laptops really are crap spec, and the phone you get won't be much better.

By the time you've finished paying the minimum contract, you could have bought the laptop & phone seperately and still had change left over.

As all the others have said, the laptop is anything but free.

I know it looks tempting but don't. Buy a lappy & take out a phone contract with a dongle.
I get 800 cross network mins, 300 texts, unlimited landline calls & dongle for £24 a month with orange. Yes you can get more minutes & texts but i hardly use the phone & the lappy lives in the truck unless i'm at an OOF or classic car meet. Dongle works all over the uk. :y

If the dongle software lets you make changes to the normal parameters, then I see no reason why a dongle shouldn't work.

You don't "trick" anything, you simply specify your own IP addy, along with gateway & APN addy's and that's it...you are on the net for as long as you like, downloading as much as you want, and no credit needed whatsoever.

I'd quite happily tell you how it's done right here, but Admin will more than likely remove the post and give me another bollocking/warning about misbehaving.

I was in currys while someone was returning one of these laptops because it was faulty. The assistant told her the lappy would have to go back and could be about three weeks.
"What about my contract for the internet?"

"That's between you and orange. Nowt to do with us" :-/
