A step backwards
« on: 15 January 2010, 14:22:48 »

Wednesday night I went to restart my PC from windows (XP Pro) and it just shut down.  Started to use the PC last night (had been on all day, screen was blank, wingled the mouse, PC back to life and the hard drive was fairly active, thought nothing of it, thought it might have been an update or something.  this went on for ages so I went for the restart option.

Shut off but never came back on, checked the PC was on but that was it, tried 2 or 3 times, still the same.  Unplugged it from the mains, went off and had my tea, an hour later, plugged in, switched on, HD light working as normal, but noting what so ever on the screen.  So no OOF for me last night.

Today looked arround for a spare PC, found 2 P4's (2.4 Compaq Evo and a Medion 2.5) but both need the network setting doing and I cant be rsed.

(One for TB new)  Found a Quibic cube case, this has been brilliant over the years and never had an issue with it - till this morning that is.  Booted it up and it stated to beep. (expected a flat cmos battery anyway) checked the vid card, no difference, lifted the ram and reseated it and am now online.

Little XP2600+, 256 mb of ram and a 120gb HD. Plus an MX440 AGP card.

Bit on the noisy side as I have the fans set on fullspeed all the time at the moment as they have an extra side fan.

Worst thing though was going back to my Dell 19" monitor as my Dell 24" WS only has the DVI connected to it.  Cant complain at the moment though.

Need to suss out whats wrong with the other one now, and put some time towards beilding its replacemt, just one more part to arrive, assing it doesnt need a new video card.   ::)

Just realised I was in 1024 x 768 as the PC had been running on a 15" screen.

Now in 1280 x 1024 and a lot better, not as nice as 1920 x 1020 1080 though.   ::)

My ultra-reliable PC died twice this morning, but restarted and is running a bit slowly.

I'm a little bit suspicious about the last lot of updates from Microsoft - they arrived on Tuesday and the computer's not been happy since. :(

You may have a point.

My PC is left on 24hours.

So my reboots may been the finnish of some of the updates.

I installed the updates on Tuesday with no problems. But, then again, I grew out of the 'taking things to bits' phase a long time ago. ::)

have you done any mods on cpu clock, gpu clock or ram clock etc ?

if I were you, would try to take the cmos battery out , wait some time (at least 10 minutes) and start without battery..  if this fails, feed your board with another psu from side (dont try to unscrew everything) and if this fails try disconnecting both dvd and hard disks ..

No tweaks or upgrades.

Has been in direneed of formatting and a reinstall.

But it is getting replaced so I cant really be bothered.  Good enough to excuse to get the new board and CPU down last night, put the CPU and heatsink in just cant remember where I put the memory, hence being on an old PC today.

Will strip the old one down to night and use some of the bits off it and test others whilst I am at it, unless there is something good on TV.  ::)

Just had the memory and visdo card (Fan) for a dust and clean, booted up and all seems fine.  Nipped into the BIOS and noticed to CPU in starting to rise on the temp, into the low 40's so might pull the cooler off for a clean and new thermal grease.

The one thing I have noticed is that the 450 watt PSU is running hotter than I remember.  fan is working but feels like it might be running slower than normal - Reason I mention it  was the system went quieter (Fan wise) whilst I monitored the CPU temp.

Any recommentions on PSU, 450 watt is OK, just want one with better cooling or fan monitoring.  Will be for a stand alone system with a CCTV card in it over the next few month's.

Next system I have a Thermaltake 720 Watt componet PSU (Plug in leads) but dont really want to use that for this system.

TIA.   :y

imho 450 Watt is adequate..High diameter slow turning fans are better for CCTV systems as they work day and night..But before cooliing must be perfect ..Newish psu's have a fan down their box hoovering  ;D  the system temperature more quickly  ..and one external fan directly looking on cpu and video card works well (as in my case ;D)

There's a lot a chat about Microsoft and especially Internet Explorer, it appears that it leaves you vulnerable to hackers and it coming out of China apparently  :( :( :( :( :( :(

This case I can put up to a 6" fan in the rear and 2 X  3 OR 4 " Ffans in front of the hard drive bay.
