Just been using another PC at work 2 years old and a dual core. E1200.

In normal use it feels quite a bit slower than the 7 Y/O P4 2.4 I am using.

Why?

My home Q8200 better than either.

If it is anything like my works laptop then it may be down to monitoring software the company use.
We have our own version of XP called UDE it stands for --------- Desktop Experience. I missed the first word out on purpose. And it makes any machine as slow as a snail. Also on mine they do something in the BIOS to slow up the hard drive, I got into the BIOS by the backdoor so to speak and set it for performance rather than battery life, and that sped it up a bit.

Same for me - the office machines are heavily loaded with measures related to security - can be quite slow - we then complain and something is done to speed up - until the next time.

To be honest if you go with the mincrosoft recommended updates plus norton (for example) updates then the same thing happens to the home machines but over a much greater time scale. Having said that I do all the recommended stuff and have never had any problems with virus or hardware.software failure leading to rebuilds /restores etc.

All of the above, but it's often due to the competence or otherwise of the Desktop Services team who set up the image that's distributed with the kit.

depending on the board settings, ram timings , on board devices (ram sharing graphics card, irq sharing cards) , disk speed, software configuration, registry condition etc etc ... many possibilites.. 

but best bet is using some speed test software and comparing them.. some software also tells which component is slowing the system down..

yep..instead of using an image, a fresh install may change the result..

No monitoring software on either

Perhaps the older state of art machine is better than the newer cheap **** machine

My works laptop runs like a dog when connected to corporate network.  Its not rubbish spec - 1.73Ghz Core2 duo with 1Gb ram on a 945 chipset. Run s much better when I'm at home, but still not great. Would be much faster with a better AV solution.

I still maintain once you get modern processors, the Vista kernel starts to make more sense than the older NT based one.

As for trying to compare a quad core to dual core.......

As for trying to compare a quad core to dual core.......

I suppose I like my PCs stripped back for performance, but the last user of the Celeryon had rather a lot of xxxx running.

That said my P4 2.4 is definately a nicer to use PC - AFAIR the Celeryon was quite cut back.

Just that using 3 PCs in a short period of time you notice
