DRUG FREE FOR 4 YEARS.
« on: 23 January 2010, 20:19:20 »

Not your usual  street drugs, but over the counter medicines.
, because  until Friday 13th January  2006 I was addicted to 'Over The Counter' medicines (Solpadiene) taking about 40 soluable a day, and after speaking to my GP who advised me that Solpadiene are NOT addictive, and then just asking a paramedic whilst waiting in the car park of our local Halfords store, he told me they are dangerous and if I go 'Cold Turkey' it would probably kill me, it is called Status Epilepticus. I decided to look on the internet and again was advised not to go cold turkey but I set a time and day, just happened that I chose Friday 13th January 2006 @1pm, and stuck by it. I did it and am now 4 years clean.
It was not easy, far from it, that weekend was a living nightmare that I would not wish on my worse enemy.
But it can be done and I am here to prove it.

After hearing about it I contacted a group and there are supposedly more people addicted to OTC medicines than are addicted to heroin. Only what I was told.

I was thinking of Scottie on giving up fags, far braver than I, as I am still on 30 a day.

Your GP was more than likely talking the physical sense (ie, in the same way there is no physical addiction to a bit of weed, sulphate, etc).

The mental addiction however can be quite ruling for some.

Nice one Di.Takes a lot of self discipline. We live in a culture of being given medicines too easily. I rather think of it like the warning lights in your car: a lot of medicines treat the symptoms and not the cause. You wouldn't cut the wires to a warning light on your dashboard would you?
Good on you, there's something I know I've gotta give up but I'm enjoying it too much... (No,its not that!)

Great news D, prescription drugs catch many people out so it's impressive that you addressed the matter and got on top of it.

Many congratulations. 8-) 8-) :y

Well done D, you were brave to stay off them when you knew it could be very dangerous. Takes a lot of willpower, you don't see that very much these days  :y

Not sure about that! I could imagine it was very difficult to do and must have taken considerable willpower. Well done :y
