I agree that we shouldn't be paying up, and that their choice of destination could have been wiser.

I am disappointed that the government haven't sent the SBS in to slot a few of the pirates and get them out though. I would hope British citizens would get a bit more backing when travelling abroad.

Mounting an operation inland in such hostile territory can prove to be a very difficult mission.  This is made more so when the hostages - as in this case - have been separated and are constantly moved around.

In addition the crucial intelligence to enable such a mission appears to be of an incomplete nature.

I do agree however that many of these pirates should be capped when identified on the high seas.

I guess my solution was oversimplified. ;D

I guess the sentiment I was trying to get across is that I do hope that someone is working on a plan for their liberation, though, and not just letting them rot. :(

I'm not altogether convinced that a raid on another sovereign state by British Special Forces would go down all that well at the UN.  Perhaps a perfect surgical strike which rescued these buffoons without hurting any Somalis (innocent or otherwise) might just scrape through, but if anyone got hurt, all our "enemies", and the enemies of our "friends" would be down on us like a ton of bricks.

I would imagine that they haven't been forgotten, K.

In situations like this the Foriegn Office does quite a lot behind the scenes but like most diplomatic efforts, it's a long, difficult and involved process.

It's about time that the west especially Britain and the U.S using all the available intel. sent a couple of submarines to sink these tinkers boats without trace.

I am sure Mr Mugabe's land would benefit with 'decommisioning' them in his face(but that will never happen) :(

An attractive solution on the face of it T however the availability of such resources is quite limited and tied to strategic operations (Nuclear Strike vessels).

The amount of resources necessary to station any vessel - even conventional boats - on site for the extended period necessary to make any real inroads into the problem simply are not available at the moment for a number of reasons – duty commitments, availability of serviceable boats and lack of personnel and so on.

If only the Royal Navy vessel which was very close to the scene of the kidnapping and watching it as it happened had been allowed to get involved at the time. ::)
