Very scary
« on: 07 February 2010, 09:14:11 »

I watched a programme on BBC 2 last night called 'The virtual revolution'. If you think that climate change or, perhaps, terrorism is scary, you should have a look at what's going on in cyberspace. A few students in Russia claimed to have brought Estonia to a standstill in a protest over something as trivial as the re-siting of a statue. The Estonian government had to cut themselves off from the outside world, electronically speaking, and still has no idea where the attack actually came from. Banks, large companies, universities etc., all rendered useless by a bunch of kids.
So, a bloodless war, but every bit as effective as a hydrogen bomb, with no clue as to who dropped it.

Sleep tight, and just hope your money is still in the bank tomorrow ;D

This is a very important issue ST.  I believe it's the tip of the iceberg and that we can expect the convenience and all-encompassing nature of the WWW to be used for purposes other than the window on the world we all like to think it is.

systems are mostly considered to be safe to "outside" by means of firewalls and authorization scripts .. However nobody thinks they also cam be hacked from "inside" by some admin or programmer ;D ;D

above event happened so many times that, many banks use software alarms for electronic transactions that involve a sum more than 3-4 times of daily atm limit..

meaning you need at least 2 insider ;D

and in fact I have seen big banks which (without any abnormal activity) collapsing their systems and having no service for 24-48 hours  :o

You can be sure that a cyber war has been raging between the superpowers for a good while now...I mean who`s to say the last economic crash was not the result of a certain asian superpower taking the 1st step against the Western superpowers... :-/ :-/
