Start of English History?
« on: 13 February 2010, 14:01:43 »

Well Sussex University have decided that they will teach English History as from 1700, oh and they will also start European History from 1900!! :o :o :o

Why?  Because they claim that the government have cut the money going to the universities by such a degree that they have decided they can no longer afford the resources for their facalties to teach history earlier than those dates!! >:( >:( >:(

Thank God already 17 academics, who were originally taught at that university, have signed a petition against it, and no doubt thousands of others will join in.

To even think about not presenting the history of England preceding 1700 is horrific;  No Saxons, Normans - 1066, no Agincourt, no Plantagenets, no Tudors - Spanish Armada -or Stuarts, creation of the Royal Navy / British Empire, no Civil War, etc, etc, the very things that made the English!

Then with Europe, at the very least it means no teaching on the period 1870 onwards! This is when the seeds for the Great War, then indeed the Second World War and the creation of modern Europe were sown.  A crucial part of modern European, and indeed British history!! >:( >:( >:( >:(

I cannot wait for the General Election as I know the Conservatives will not let this stupidity happen! :y :y :y :y :y

no doubt Universities will use goverment under funding as an excuse to go for un-capped yearly fee's. I got through just before the first change, my fee's were £1,150 a year, they are now £3,000 per year.  :o

Thats just to do the course, no food, no rent, no books, no materials.

So not only are the degree's lacking detail, costs are soaring. Its highly likey we will see £10,000 per year fee's by the end of the decade  :(  :'(

Its a lot of money to get you through the paper sift at the interview.....  :-/
