I was referring to the`soap car`.saranbailey had a light flashing on the dash and misfire in late december with this car and was advised both cats faulty and no4 plug.  When saranbailey was sold the car they were informed by the seller it had a faulty cat. They changed the spark plugs and put it down to moisture and never informed the forum if it had affected a cure.
I think i would be checking whether there is an emission light bulb present in the dash.
I have also noticed saranbailey has been online yesterday and that would have been an excellent opportunity for them to confirm the cambelt change.
I did my homework on the car as i considered buying it and Diane suggested to me in a pm that i might and then she could buy mine.In reply i told her i was staying well clear.
The whole thing is one big crap scenario and there is no glossing round it.I sympathise with Diane but was taken aback when after outlining all the faults she declared she wouldnt sell it for less than she paid.

I have a 2.6 with the emissions light on, it did go out for a while when I put a new cheap MAF on, but it's on again now. It even flashes sometimes, accompanied by a misfire. What does the EML signify then?

It indicates a fault that the engine management system has logged. If it's flashing (normally when you boot it) it indicates that it's likely to damage the cats (so avoid the scenario and get it looked at ASAP).

You can do a  "pedal check" to see what codes are stored.

Yes, I have the 'lean burn' codes and various misfire codes on there, James told me I needed new spark plugs which I'm sure will help, and I'll just put up with the emissions light cos I'm not about to start relocating the lambda sensors...

You know there are separate emissions and engine warning lights (the engine one has a spanner through it)?  If it is the emissions one (no spanner) and its flashing as opposed to on full time, that indicates a serious problem as Kevin said.   If its on full time, more than likely that is the old precat problem which isn't a big deal.

Excuse my ignorance but when you talk about the common 3.2 fault do you mean the pre-cats and the remedy being re-siting the sensors.

That's the chap.  and it causes the emissions light to come on (as opposed to the EML.. ::) ;D)

You sure about that ::)

James .. get her to "pedal trick" it ... if it 0420 or 0430 thats the precat issue, anything else you need to check the codes ..

It is interesting .. that I have .. in 2 years of ownership .. only had the 0420/0430 lights just after refuelling in France .. reset them ... then they reoccur just after refuelling back in UK .. reset and they don't recur.

I wonder if the system picks up some sort of change in the exhaust, through different fuel characteristics, as a "failure" of some sort .. :(

Whatever ...  pedal trick to read the codes is the first priority.  :)

Hmmm - that's ringing a bell.
I remember my mate going off to France and Germany. He had a helluva misfire (Signum 3.0 litre) in France. Got to Germany, filled up, got the car checked out at Opel garage, they said it was probably the sub-standard French petrol.
After a few minutes, all codes cleared, car ran fine and has done since.

Possibly same on the Omega?

When I drove my 2.0 16v Mig to France/Belguim, Aged 19/20, I filled up on their 98 ron, as it's all they had. Ran hotter/more laborious than ever, and you could almost watch the gauge drop  ::)
