Here we have green bins (food waste and garden compostables) collected weekly.

General household waste in black bins collected fortnightly but alternating with [blue box (glass and cans) and clear bags (paper and plastics)].

Fortunately we can print out the collection weeks off the council's website if we lost the leaflet they delivered.  Having said that I just looked for it and couldn't find it there was so much 'stuff' on the website!

It depends what is meant by fortnightly.Our general waste is collected on alternate weeks as is the recycling.The recycling is collected on the week that the general isnt so we have collections once per week. :-/

Black Wheelie Bin = Non Recycle emptied once a fortnight.

Green Wheelie Bine - Garden waste emptied alternate weeks.

Blue container = Glass and Metal emptied same day as green bin

Blue canvas bag = Newspaper emptied on green bin fortnight.


No problems for us, 2 black bins allowed for larger families.


If anything ever changed then would add one for plastics, but then it gets daft regards space,

We've had same system for 9yrs, so everyone is used to it (except people who have just moved in - I normally knock on their door if a new owner has cocked up (we have a good community spirit in our Close))

In Aylesbury, when I lived there, about 15yrs ago, they enforced recycling by still emptying the bins weekly, but providing much smaller wheelie bins.  That worked well as well, after the initial uproar that people would need to get up off their fat, lazy arses and recycle.

No, not yet.

We have

Green bin - garden waste
Blue Bin - Recyclables - Plastic (yes most plastic!), cans cardboard, tetra packs etc.
Grey bin - Domestic waste

We do have to take glass to the recycling point ourself but thats no big issue as they have them at all the supermarkets.

We were told not to recycle these.
Having just had a bin strike here in Leeds,well a month or 2 ago,any sort of regular service is greatly appreciated,Not having collections for 2 months + really focuses your mind on how much waste is generated, and how much pointless packaging and plastic there is.

we have black boxs here in Reading district council, you can have as many as you like at a small cost each, all they ask is seperate the platic and tins from the paper, garden waste goes in a nylon bag. Black boxs and garden waste rotate weekly. Household rubbish is black bin sacks every week.

We have no bin cupboard as some other houses do near us, so each time it rains the boxs fill with water and leak through the drain holes all over your feet when you pick them up.

Go two mins up the road to Reading council and they get 3 differant coloured wheely bins per household. Far better.

Once a fortnight :-? Mine goes out (on average) about every six weeks (sometimes longer).
I recycle as much as i can, but when we buy products in packaging that can't be recycled ( No 3-4-5-6 plastics for example).
They should concentrate on the producers of the products & get them to use more popular packaging etc.

we have alternate collections here; one week its gen waste, the other recyclable. The problem is that theyre still not set up to recycle all the things that could be recycled so that ,whilst the green bin is fine to be emptied fortnightly, the other is always full plus a few bags over which they will not collect. Result is a steady build up of smelly bags that I then have to stink the car out with when I take the hour odd round journey to the local tip. My council tax keeps creeping up but my service levels keep going down >:(For those who either cant or wont do a tip run the end result is an increase in flytipping and calls to the "enviromental rangers" as theyre called. It really wasnt rocket science to predict that this was exactly what was going to happen, but hey, when did the words "common sense"and "local council "ever go in the same sentence....

I've had weekly collections of both recycled and general waste, plus we have a free skip service every six months.

As I said at the beginning, I don't mind every two weeks at all, I would just like the real reason behind it to be revealed.

I hate waste, but I hate obfuscation just as much.

No door to door rubbish collections in Spain. Instead plenty of street big green wheely bins everywhere, plus a good selection of recycling wheely bins. The bins get emptied very regularly. Much lower council tax a result.

Recycling is further advanced here (even waste cooking oil bins) and is a way of life. When you go out you take something to the bins!

 Well we all need to remember that all councils are running a trial run of there own and at some point it might just show which scheme worked the best, although it may cause further confusion for a grater part of us if one method works best.
 I`t is found though that once the food waste collection was brought in, in a certain area, that the collection of black bags (or G-waste) have warrant taking off the road at least a ash cart and also the weight now carried could allow collection to go fortnightly, well after the food has been collected separate and all the cans/bottles have been washed, or rinsed at least, there would be no attraction for unwanted pests.

Now I wish I hadn't read this as I'm now boring myself as to the multiple reasons there are but two council 18ton+ lorries a in my culdesac every week no thanks and I will welcome the fortnightly collection

Nice to see so much standardisation on the colour and type of bins.

We have a green one for landfill and a black one for recycling (tins, plastic bottles and paper only) alternate weeks and a glass collection once in a blue moon but I can never remember when - so that's a waste of diesel.

Also a separate garden waste collection but you have to pay extra for that so I hide it in the landfill bin take it to the tip.
