I'm not the worlds best at spelling, but i do try.
What i don't like is folk pulling me up for spelling & punctuation when they're just as bad.
We all make mistakes (apart from STOM of course) ;D

Please feel free to correct any mistakes I may make. :) :) :)

No :P

Now that's quite interesting.  Should it be "There seems to be a lot..." or "There seem to be a lot...".

The second sounds better to me, but I suspect the first one might actually be correct, as "lot" is singular.  I'll have to look it up. :)

Did you realise that on the World Wide Web, there's no extra charge for spaces between the words? :) :) :)

But it will cost me more to buy a proper keyboard that has not got dodgy keys on it., this one is brand new and the space bar is awfull, unless you hit it dead centre it wont give a space.

After sitting on your hand to make it go numb, (we all know why you do it), give it time to recover before attempting to type. ;)

That is an interesting observation indeed  J.

Having mislaid my 'Fowler's', I fell to Gower's 'Plain Words' but found no direct reference.

However, I would tend to favour the first example - although the piece might be better written with the 'lot' pluralize should the writer wish to use either 'seems' or 'seem' as the  indicative obversation.

[edit]for not being able to see properly through the lenses of these fancy 'Varifocal' spectacles and using a physiological term when I shouldn't have [/edit]

Freudian slip?  Delusions of grandeur, perhaps?

Don't think I've actually got Fowler's - we may have acquired it at a car boot sale, but, if so, I've no idea where it would be.  Ditto Kennedy - that's why I never followed up the Latin question I raised some weeks ago.  Really must tidy up the 3000 or so books scattered around the house. :) :) :)
