A few weeks ago, the lad in the corner house went away for a few days, Friday to Thursday and got back to discover his motor bike had been stolen, kept it under a tarpaulin on the rear patio.

Bumped into him today, asked him any joy?

It appears the police found it on the Friday night he went away, followed 4 kids with a petrol can into some bushes, and there it was.

Couldn't charge them?????? because the kids said they had only just spotted it??????

Anyway, because it wasn't reported stolen, the lad was away and didn't report it till Thursday, they passed it over to a collection agency.

The collection agency want £150 collection fee, plus £25 per day storage, bill now standing at over £1000.

Police say it's out of their hands!

I know it's a few years since I was in the recovery game but stolen/abandoned vehicles were only chargeable at agreed statutory rates... They were: £105 Collection and £12/day storage IIRCC... Oh, and VAT exempt.

I'm sure the same still applies, although the rates will have risen, and storage shouldn't be getting charged if he reported it when he returned and the police didn't inform him where the vehicle was immediately, they can only charge up to the reporting of the crime, the police are liable for the rest

That's rather' outrageous...equates to legalised profiteering/crime.
   No wonder some take the law into thier own hands. >:(

And thats half the problem .. :(  These robbing idiots get paid by insurance settlement and view it as "victimless" ... but we ALL pay through increased premiums .. and those who can't claim get stuffed.

If the insurance companies actually got together and refused to pay these outrageous charges - £25 a day to park a car on some wasteland !!! - we would all be better off.

Rant over .. :(

It certainly does beggar belief; everything in this land of New Labour seems to have been allotted a price.

The last 12 years have been nothing but a charter for spivs, wide boys and heartless profiteers.

Whilst I'm not defending the charges I do have to disagree... In Hampshire a condition of working on the Police contract was having a secure, alarmed compound, which was a real PITA when people broke in as I'd get called out to attend (without police backup) knowing full well I could get greeted by some unhappy yoof (or worse) trying to get his car back! You also had to have a dedicated, internal area for Scenes of Crime and Accident investigator use which needed to be big enough to take all the vehicles recovered overnight/a weekend.

Not cheap stuff :o :o But even so

Frightening isn't it...

I managed to slide off the road in my second car in January.  Plod rolled up after a while and said that I didn't have to shift it as it was neatly parked in a ditch and not an obstruction to anyone and I hadn't damaged anything except my own car.  I decided to see if the insurance company or AA would pull me out.  Neither would - or at least not without rubbing their hands with glee at the thought of the charge they could make.  So the copper piped up that he could get it pulled out.  It'd be £120 and I could pick it up at the local recovery yard the next day.  Left it with him and went home - I'd just rolled a car, so wasn't feeling 100% and there was no paperwork to sign.  Next day saw £300 leave my wallet as the recovery company moaned about having to use 'specialist equipment' and government statuatory fees so there's nothing they can do.
Not only that they'd bent the roof by using a strap underneath both windows to lift it out.  I'm certain that it would have just pulled out if I'd got a 4x4 or tractor and a decent tow rope.  It might have only been a scrapper to them, but it was the only means I had to get around, and as far as I was concerned when I left it, it was repairable.  Wasn't a happy bunny for days... >:(

Sounds like a careless recovery to me... I think I only damaged 1 vehicle during recovery in all the time I was doing it and it was most definitely a write off before I started... It had been rolled (a couple of times by all accounts) and was "parked" half way up a tree :o :o

As a word of advice to all here...

If you are in a situation where the police offer to recover your vehicle do your utmost not to let them... Most insurance companies have a contract with a breakdown company and will arrange recovery if you can get in touch with them :y :y

More info on this story, according to his next door neighbour, the bike was left in the front garden, behind a laurel bush, with no security, it had been there for weeks unused, and he wasn't away, he was at home, didn't notice it had been stolen!

Spun the police a cock and bull story.

Got no sympaphy now!
