Whilst I was in South Africa my father was taken seriously ill and was very lucky to survive. Fantastic job at Tameside and Manchester Royal. He is due to leave hospital next Monday and he hopes to see his 89th birthday on tuesday so fingers crossed.

Obviously there were many calls to and fro from family members on mobiles.

Just got the mobile bill which is £500 for the month - normally around £100.

Orange do not want to know and whilst for me this is not a major issue (annoying but in the circumstances happy to pay) just supposing you could not afford if a family emergency situation?

Is there anyone with experience of claiming this type of expense back from either mobile provider (as goodwill gesture) or insurance on production of medical evidence?

An 8 minute call was more than £13.

As it happens I went out of contract with Orange this week so after 11 years will probably change as they have had a lot of dosh from me over the years business and personal.

Speak to your travel insurance company

Sadly, their line will be that you used the service, so you have to pay.  Less likely to get it waived, as they have to pay the local providers abroad.

Oh yes... And to be fair, Orange have provided the service so there is no getting away from that. But the travel insurance may help out, although the more I think about it I doubt it

Thats my gut reaction to be honest  :-/

If they routinely did it, everyone would be ringing up claiming it was an illness etc  :-/


Annoying that it is, guess they'll have to swallow the charge  , and be thankful that his Dad pulled through fine

sorry but if you use your phone you have to pay.
the only way of reducing it is to check with the provider befor you go if they have any deals,buy a pay as you go sim in the country you vist or take a payg sim from the uk.the downside to the last 2 is you lose your number
must have been a shock when you got the bill,glad your old mans okay
