One of my car sales adverts on ebay has had an odd thing happen to it.
It is a classified ad, and on the page you insert your telephone number so people can call you, which I did.
However, that number today changed to one that wasn't mine, and I hadn't changed it myself. I've had another trader pester me to sell it to him at trade price, and it turns out this new number that appeared I didn't recognise was his.
I don't understand how that could have happened, I obviously didn't change it myself. I only know it's his number because when you sell vehicles on ebay if a number is listed for that person, it comes up.
So it's his number, was it an ebay glitch...or has he managed to get into my account somehow and change it to his?
I've changed it back to my number now, changed my ebay password...and it appears nothing was bought with my account, only the change of number.
I've tried ringing the number, to pretend to be interested in the Merc. And say 'Oh Hello, I'm calling about the the black Merc you have on ebay.' If he said sorry, not mine of seemed confused then clearly it had been a mistake, but if he'd have said oh yes etc etc than I'd know he'd somehow changed it.
Not sure what to do,
My proper number ends in 853...but this new number was 01977555944, I've tried ringing but goes to answer machine. Maybe someone wants to pretend to be interested in a black 2004 Mercedes and phone him up to ask 
He could well be innocent, I'm just concerned it happened.

Sounds too much of a coincidence to be a mistake, TBH. :-/

I'd inform Ebay. At least you're covered if anything else odd happens.

Did he direct you to any website while you were talking to him?

Or did you look at his site after talking to him?

He could have phoned Ebay and told them his  (yours) PC was acting up and you needed to change the number.

Depending on who answers the phone depends on what security they ask for (if any) and he could have bluffed that (We know what car salesmen are like with thier patter) He could have got past secutity in many ways.



Ring ebay up and see how far you get, hopefully you draw a blank and they wont help you.  But whilst on the phone get them to check thier logs and see if they can tell you anything as to what may have happened.

Then the police if Ebay give you proof, as it is attempted fraud.

Ebay technical support are next to useless, and slow.  I had my account hacked about 2 years ago and it took 3 weeks and the setting up of a second email account to get it back!

Afair you cant call them anyway, it's email only (36 hours to wait for a reply)

Assuming your password wasn't something very obvious (!) what is more likely is:

a) a cookie hack, which would require him to get you to a page where he had infected the malicious code.  Requires the technical savvy beyond most car salesmen (no offense josh) thus unlikely

b) brute force attack on password by thrird party.  Unless the car saleman made a seriously bad call on careers we know it isn't him.  Could be coincidental someone changed your phone number, we haven't proven that it was his number that was inserted.  However once you get in to someones account you look to do more than a number change on one item so unsure.

c) by trawling through various sites you may have come across one like mentionned in a)   but then again why would anyone go to all that trouble to put in a phone number?

So without the help of ebay looking through their logs (trust me you have more chance of winning the lottery jackpot 3 weeks in a row than this ever happening) you wont know for sure.  Make sure the new password is very secure using leters numbers and symbols (even better use the phrase technique) and make sure your AV and ASW are upto date and functionning.

The phone number thing must be recent.  It still says to send them an email to sort it out though....pillocks.
