Broke my Windscreen
« on: 06 April 2007, 15:55:00 »

Last night, thought I'd "borrow" the mirror from the GLS to time up the Elite, because I couldnt find the one in my toolbox. It unclipped OK, then I met some resistance, so I gave it a VERY mild pull.

To cut a long story short, the mirror came down alright....... but it pulled a bloody great chunk of glass out of my windscreen with it

Done that before - showing off about 10 years ago....

There was a small fly on windscreen and I bet that, the passenger,  i could hit it before it moved.

I missed.... and like you the small tap the windscreen got turned into a 14inch crack..... >:(

Presume its your car ( insurance replaed) and not an uninsured project?

Front screen broke yesterday beyond repair (new screen) on the daughters 307CC ( the hard top convertible ).  She is insured with hephelump.com.  On calling the contact centre, was told to speak to RAC windscreens (number supplied) who said earliest repair and return was Wednesday/Thursday nxt week.  Not good enough, says dad when he gets the phone from tearfull daughter who now has to readjust boyfriend plans over easter weekend....

Long story short - was allowed to source screen elsewhere so that RAC approved repairer could fit, if I wanted to...

Cost from independant was £638.48

plus £70 excess, if RAC fitted....

Spoke to RAC man again and he extracted his thumb and got on the 'phone .....

Got the car back this afternoon and looking forward to daughter annoying prospective in-laws over the weekend....

I thought you were breaking an Omega?. You can get the screen out, just need to cut thro the bonding glue. I saw a scrappy cut one out and made a copy of his cutter. it was a piece of steel about 6", bent about 3/4" from the end. You sharpen the 3/4" and fit a handle to whats left. You then fit a piece of string about 1" up from the bend and fit a pulling toggle to the end. If you push the sharpened bit into the bonding glue, use the handle to guide it, keeping it perpendicular to the glass, but in the glue, and pull with the toggle, this should work its way thro the bonding bit and cut the screen out. I would mention the screens are very fragile, I broke 1 before getting one out, sorry Mr scrapyard ;D  Transporting it is a pain cause they are very sensitive and need to be well supported. Then find a helpful window fitter chap how can put it in for a small donation, and jobs a good 'un :y

Excellent!! Amazing what a word in their shell like makes .... especially by a bloke who is less likely to be fobbed off then a young girl.

Similar to my brother who had a Mitsubishi FTO and needed a door window. Insurers told him to take it to their repairer who contacted Mitubishi of all places  :-?  for a replacement. As the cars are grey import Mitsubishi gave a delivery time of 3 MONTHS. 10 minutes in t'nternet found a new one, told the insurers who relented and agreed to its fitment. 4 days later, coincidently over Easter, & he had a new window in his car.
