Motorway Driving In Switzerland
« on: 27 March 2010, 11:20:18 »

Our summer holidays in France this year are close enough to allow for day trips to Switzerland.
I read recently that there is in place a toll system for driving on the motorways there.
I was wondering if any of you much travelled people could advise how this is operated.
Is it run like the French motorway system where you pay at toll booths or is it required to pre-purchase a permit of some sorts.
I've calculated the French tolls and it's going to cost nearly £50 eachway from Calais to Macon and if it's to to add much more to travel to Switzerland for day tripos, we'll just use the train.
Has anyone any experience of this? ::)

I believe you have to buy a sticker for your windscreen in Switzerland (available at the border) then there are no tolls as such. Don't recall it being stupidly expensive. 20 or 30 euros perhaps?

You need to buy a Vignette to drive the autobahns of Suisse at a cost of CHF40.00. these can be got online HERE. If you choose not to buy one then you could face, if caught, a fine of CHF100.00 plus the cost of the Vignette.

HTH :y

EDIT: If you take a trailer/pikey palace then you have to buy a 2nd Vignette for that as well :y

i bought a Vignette from eBay, bought it for my post uni road trip with mates, it was stuck on with sticky tape  ::)

Did wonder if i would get stopped at border in my Senator, which was fully loaded with students, beer, and some well done electronics  ::)

If you want to get anywhere fast, use the motorways  :)

Watch out in France if you go there, they check time stamps between toll sections on your ticket, plod lurk just after them.  :)

Have you tried crossing switzerland without touching a motorway? It takes 3 times as long ;D I just used to run them and pay the fines on the company credit card ;D

I drive through Switzerland at least once a week, and you need the sticker/vignette in the windows to drive on the motorways it cost me Euro30.00 or £27.00 on my credit card but is valid for a year, also fuel is cheaper in Switerland so fill your car up and try to get some of the money back from the vignette back :y

There is also an option to avoid the tolls... Click on more options (top left) and tick the avoid tolls option, then click Lets go. This will probably take you via Monte Carlo but bear in mind you have to pay for a tunnel going that way ;) :y

The best way to go to avoid the tolls in France is to go via Belgium, when Luxembourg, when Germany, going this way you wont have to pay a single toll until you get to the Swiss Border at Basel, then exit Switzerland just North of Milan the Tolls in Italy are Expensive :-[
And the tolls both are for left hand drive cars so make sure your passenger has the cash or credit card

.Use this website, its the french motorway website tells you all the toll charges :y

http://www.autoroutes.fr/en/homepage.html

CHE : 40.00 CHF for 1 year

(1) Apart from taking breaks, normal conditions (trafic and weather)
(2) Apart from toll bridges and tunnels out of France

And the ItailanTolls:
