I think it's a good initaive, for numerous reasons;
22,000 less chilren with asthma or related difficulty cna only be a good thing
I've seen many people not in full control of thier vehicle whilst smoking
Anything that saves the NHS money is a bonus, I watched the BBC report...and it was estimated it could save the NHS £23,000,000 iirc. Even if the true figure is half thatm that's still great.
Children who have no choice should not be subject to second hand smoke and the detrimental effects it can cause them.
Smoking is a disghusting habit, and we clearly know by now it is harmful. If smokers continue, that is their choice...I would never advocate taking away their right to continue. But when it effects other people, tough for them...they'll have to get over it.

I think smoking near children is cruel, but people on their own - who cares?

In theory .. probably a reasonable idea  ..

In practice ... probably un-enforceable ...  just like the mobile phone laws .. :(

they are banning it at work, ie not allowed on the premises, no smoking area, nothing.

Its funny, on average, the severity of staff uproar is almost dirrectly proportionate to the severity of the smoker. The hard core smokers, most nicotene addicted, are in incensed. The less addicted, those that left school before starting for instance, are more accepting and are doing themselves and everyone around them a favour by giving up.

Personally, if you ask any smoker to be truely honest with themselves, they know, deep down its a fairly indefencibe to continue smoking. Cost, health, the mess and stink it creates, lost work hours, distraction while driving...even the old classic reply "i enjoy it" doesnt wash, typical addiction response.

Singly the most rampant cause of Death and ill health in the modern world....afaik?

There, that should stir em up a bit... ;D

Correct. Passing a law is absolutely pointless unless you have the means to enforce it. No doubt they will fit smoke detectors to speed cameras.

They gave up on that particularly stupid idea at Hall's Mentholyputus a few years before they closed the place. It just forced smoker's into places they shouldn't be.
They put a smoking shelter up in within a few months of the 'total smoking ban'

...not enough that you, as a smoker, will notice. Its something you will be blissfully unaware of....
.....until you give up.

Despite being a relatively recent ex-smoker I think this banning business has gone far enough.

The local pub used to be full of blokes smoking and watching the footie of a Saturday afternoon. Now, IMHO, the air is much better in the pubs but they are struggling to stay open because they are empty. There were no kids passive smoking in there, just adults who can make their own minds up what they want to be exposed to.

Nobody is allowed to smoke at work any more.

Now we're supposed to ban them from smoking in their cars on the way to/from work? What is the first thing they are going to do when the return to their homes - the last refuge of the smoker that the government can't touch? Say hello to their kids? light up? both perhaps?

So, we're going to protect kids from passive smoking by banishing their parents away from smoking in adult-only environments into their homes where they spend the greatest amount of time with their kids.  ::)

There's enough "information" about smoking for any adult who cares to make the right decision for themselves. We really don't need any more "nanny state".

.. and allow doctors alone to form policy? Bit like turkeys and Christmas, IMHO.
