Car taxation bands
« on: 31 March 2010, 22:55:04 »

I have just read the editorial page of the latest Car Mechanics magazine and they state that as from April this year new car taxation bands will come into force and all cars from 2001 on will be affected.  This means that all the later petrol engined Omegas (such as mine for a start) will be either Band L (£425 per year) or Band M (£435 per year), all the other bands being £235 or less per year.

No one else here seems to have noticed this, I admit that I am only an occasional reader of this excellent forum so perhaps this has already been posted and discussed.

I thought that this retrospective tax nonsense was killed off last year or have I missed something here?

You have either misread the article.. or they have misquoted the rules ..

from 1 st April 2010 (tomorrow) these rules apply

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_172916

Yours will be band K as the little * takes you to

*Band K includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006.

Inaccurate reporting . ...  >:( >:( >:( >:(

Thank you Entwood, Car Mechnics is a great magazine but they have obviously made a mistake here, what a relief!

Is it not still the case that cars registered before 2001 still pay based on engine size? I think there is still an increase in duty, but it's not as much.

Up to 1600-ish and over 1600-ish

What about cars registered before 1 March 2001?

Rates for cars and vans registered before 1 March 2001 are based on engine size. The rates for these cars from April 2010 are shown in the table below:

Engine size (cc)
 2010-11

Not over 1549
 £125

Over 1549
 £205
