Computing question - Vista
« on: 02 April 2010, 20:26:48 »

Mate has a Samsung Q35. Hard drive has failed. I've replaced it no problem.

He can't find his recovery disk, and there is no option to download one on the samsung site.

The OS according to the sticker on the back "looks"  - (its very worn but the numbers are good) - to say something like "Vista Home Premium Compact" ????

When I try to load from my Vista Home Premium disc it accepts the key without a problem, then starts to unpack the files, and comes up with an error "can't find the required files" ???

I've done a test install of XP SP3 and it all goes on fine.

Q : Is "Vista Home Premium Compact" a special version of Vista ?? If so how do I get a copy ?

Any one any other ideas ??

No OS on those discs .. just drivers which I can get from here ...

http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_ia_cd=05012400&prd_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=NP-Q35&prd_ia_sub_class_cd=P

It's getting vista on that seems to be the problem .. :(

That is one of the discs you need but you should be able to run any version of home premium on it first using the current EULA COA. Is the Vista HP disc OK? I only ever got 'can't find the required files' message when I was using a badly scratched disc.

had a thought .. followed by a play ...

Installed XP SP3

From inside XP ran the Vista disc, select "install" .. upgrade is NOT allowed from XP to vista, but an install commences renaming old windows folder to windows.old .. so in goes the key, of it goes .. and it is reading the disc no problem !!

We wait to see what occurs  :)

Most odd... :)

EDIT : Booger .. gets to 16% of file copy and then can't read ... must be something up with the disc ...  guess I'll be downloading a backup copy .. :(

If anyone is remotely interested ...  Further playing found that the Q35 would not read install.wim for some weird reason

 found this ...

http://keithelder.net/blog/archive/2006/11/17/part-2-installing-windows-vista-cannot-find-file-d-sources-install-wim.aspx

Now my system would read all the files, so I made a new DVD using a verbatim disc at 4x .. and it is all working fine .. at least it's reached 82% of file copy so far !!

Your better off keeping this on and not bothering with Vista.  Or go Windows7 :y
