life in Brackley
« on: 10 April 2010, 07:36:16 »

The inlaws have been looking for a house in the oxford area for some time and last week they made an offer on a place in Brackley.... of all places, i said dont move there, i know of a couple of right dodgy caracters in Brackley.

But whats it like living in Brackley? seems i nice enough village from the one time i've been there, is there much noise from the a43? GP weekend is a pain i suppose, any problems getting in and out during rush hour, any dodgy areas to avoid? etc ...?

To answer your Q chrisgixer...

Its a quiet small town. Transport essential, as little here.  The Tesco is small, with the limited choices that implies. Waitrose is also small, but offers a different selection. Excellent 'old style' hardware store, but little else.

The local council does help organise events - carnival day, the (excellent) beer festival in the main car park, the kart racing.

I don't hear A43, except in middle of night when you occasionally hear a 600cc testing what it will do - thats more of a statement of how silent it is, rather than the A43 being a problem.

Trafficwise, none to speak of. Ever.  Due to some of the narrow roads with onstreet parking, around secondary school on Manor Rd and the small school on Banbury road, can be a bit 'chaotic' at school run time - but I just choose a different route at those times.  Further afield, the M40 Jnc10 and Jnc9 are a right sod, particularly friday afternoon.  Silverstone weekend, become a hermit.

In the summer, due to 2 local airstrips, lot of noise from light aircraft. Silverstone weekend, Silverstone is the busiest airport in the world, all noisy choppers.

Where have they bought?  We are prone to snow it seems, and being right at the edge of 3 county councils, rarely see grit.  My end of town is on a hill, sometimes getting up can be tricky with the snow we've had for the past 2 yrs.

To be honest, I lived most of my life in Aylesbury, so when I moved to Brackley, I missed having everything on my doorstep.

However, as time has gone on, I still go back to Aylesbury (my best mate lives there - til the end of the month, when he moves to Brackley as well!), and, and I don't mean to alienate the Aylesburians on this site, it makes me appreciate what we (don't) have here.

It took a few years to get use to the quietness, and the fact you have to be organised (can't just nip out for a pack of screws - Banbury is a 20m round trip, and a sod with traffic, and the local DIY store is only open on sat morning (and is closed lunchtime in the week ;D)), but I kinda really like it here. Just don't tell Mrs TheBoy ;)

Ah, another downside - only sit down restuarants are curry houses. Lots of them.  No eat-in Chinese, not sure if Italian still there.  Estate pub - Chequered Flag - that technically I'm still barred from ::), does food and a quiz night, but is, ultimately, and estate pub.  One of the other pubs, name escapes me, but was my favourite, has also turned to the darkside and turned have of itself over to food :(.

Can always get a late night pizza/kebab/burger from the shop opposite the Post Office - better ime than the kebab van in the carpark.

Blencowe Drive they tell me, its only at the offer stage so all sorts can still go wrong until contracts are exchanged.

Sounds very similar to thier current Walton on the naze, but being a see side town its dead off season, in season its rammed solid so they stay put and dont go out, not sure where they go shopping but Brackley does soind like in improvement, local youth are a mare as there's nothing for them to do....

Apart from the phantom tyre slasher a few years back, no trouble here. Kids gather around estate shops, but no hassle. Occasional Chav meet in car park.

Usually weekly headline is that mrs smith dropped a stitch whilst knitting

Older part of estate, bottom of hill. Nearest pub is chequered flag or one on Banbury road. Walking distance to estate shops, main tesco probably just over mile, so car needed. Petrol not cheap here, so fill up when out and about. Far enough from a43, but may hear new Banbury rd bypass

;D Mrs Smith will get on well with Mrs inlaw then. Thanks TB, i'll pass on the info and lengthy replys, a good insite.

Sounds ideal, Mrs G and i are keen for them to move a bit more central, both to us and other family members. They want to stay by the see, but are starting to realise how remote it is, 3hour drive on a dood day for Mrs G in the Polo, conciderably longer for them to drive here. So if something happens in an emergency, we'll be in a better position to help them in Brackley, and brother inlaw has a house in Buckelberry? i think.
