why can't you use the phone? seems bizarre, as bizarre as not being able to use a mobile phone at the petrol station - try it - they go nuts  ;D ;D ;D

no idea why

anyone working or worked in a petrol station? - i'd love to know the thinking behind it - there is a myth that it "interferes" with the pump and the whole thing goes up in a massive fireball,  is that the reason?

I think people used to think there was a risk of sparks igniting the petrol but the recent excuse I heard was that it was a dangerous environment to be distracted by talking on the phone.......... hmmm....

Can't imagine the same applies with jobseekers though.....

Myth Busters couldnt  prove any issues with mobile phones.  But in the US where they can lock the pump lever whilst filling they found there was a possible problem the ladies and thier "pantyhose" (Nylon Tights to us)  apparently women used to get back in thier cars whilst filling up and check thier makeup, on get back out of the carthey reckoned static from the tights and velour seats could possibley ignite the petrol vapour surrounding the car.

Of a few cases reported they reckon it wasn't conclusive.

Static discharge I believe.

Thing is, mobile phone handsets are based around 1/4 watt technology these days, back in the days of carphones they could possibly be transmitting and receiving at up to 8 watts.

Mrs has been manager at 3 petrol stations, it's because mobile phones can generate static electric sparks, these can ignite the fuel vapours, something along those lines she said. She did say a bloke used to come in there who, when filling his boat with fuel, his phone rang and he got burnt up the arms and face  :o
