Apparently, quite a few cats like having their scruffs compressed with clips and this clipping is used as a technique to calm agitated moggies. It is suggested that this is a natural response to their kitten behaviour when they were picked up by their mothers. Picking them up in this way would depend on the weight of the cat but, if it hurt it, you'd soon know. Frankly, can't see much wrong with the photo.  :-/

According to our vet scruffing a ferret kind of hypnotizes it, it's how he always handles them.
So maybe it has a similar effect on cats.

ok.. skin in babies are suitable for holding..

but an adult is not the same..

and it will hurt them.. our cats shout if you hold like that.. :(

and is it so hard to use second hand also ?

Totally agree with it.

We used to have 7 cats (Not my choice) and there is no problam at all picking them up by the scruff od the neck, watch any nayure problem and any mothers carrying thier sibblings pick them up by thier necks (With thier teeth I might add)

A cat will just hold steady as if totaly relaxed and I would very much doebt it would try and scrath you one lifted off the ground.

I personally dont have a problem with what she is doing in the picture, allthough I would prefer her to be picking the cat up like that for a better reason thab taking it's picture.
