Why can't people grasp roundabouts?
« on: 21 April 2010, 16:04:06 »

Just coming home with the mrs and son from school, got to a roundabout where usually people never get in the right lane the exit is past twelve o'clock so you get in the right hand lane. Not as a bloke in a Skoda roomster has just done and was literally about an inch from the rear of my car, he then had the damn right cheek to toot at me! Then waving his arms around, then there was some nice verbal abuse from me then he kept going so I stopped in the road, and said to him in not such a polite manner, read the highway code, don't toot at me when you're in the wrong and if you want to carry this on get out of your car, he quickly then shut up, then turned down another road  >:( >:(

I wouldn't have minded but trying to imply I was in the wrong really got my back up. What is it people can't grasp if a turning on a roundabout is past twelve o'clock USE THE RIGHT HAND LANE. I was already in a bad mood today and this pissed me off even more.

Rant over, hows eveyone else's day been?

I've got a roundabout just like this near to where I work, with exactly the same problem, but so many people use both lanes that now I just use the one with the shortest queue and take great care.
What does get my back up about roundabouts though is the amount of people who cut you up from the outside lane when you're passing on the inside, simply because they can't be arsed to look in their mirrors. Lost count of the number of times that's happened

You're right. But you do have to wonder whether thsoe who design some of our roundabouts have ever been behind the wheel of a car in their life. There's a roundabout near me, going onto the M60 that isn't at all obvious to a stranger, you can easily find yourself in the wrong lane. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=m60+jct+17&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=21.856753,56.99707&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=M60,+United+Kingdom&ll=53.540131,-2.289326&spn=0,0.001739&t=h&z=20&layer=c&cbll=53.539884,-2.289368&panoid=t8oRO89j_PAAbuq3uiEQow&cbp=12,169.84,,0,5

I fully understand but, this roundabout, you can see the exit coming down the road. I mean I was fully aware he was there, but he raced up to the side of me to try and get past which was annoying anyway, he was then shocked when I didn't move. But the flipping cheek to toot at me for him being in the wrong  >:(

Is that the TA / Tank roundabout Del? :-/

If it is yes many a time people have tried to do that to me, and I have seen drivers do it to others, with on at least one occasion a car ending up on the grass verge!

When I had my old Toyota I just used to indicate and turn left as you should, with anyone trying to come up wrongly on the inside having to give way or risk denting their lovely polished car.

With the miggies I am a little more careful and just use my car's power and my experience to slot in.

That roundabout, and a few others around, really require road markings to remind those forgetting about the Highway Code where they should go! ::) ::) :D :D ;)

EDIT:  I have just seen your Google map reference, and yes it is that roundabout!!!

I've no idea about all French roundabouts, but after they got the priority sorted  ;) a lot of their roundabouts only have a single lane on the entry road. This obviously stops people going on in pairs & would stop most of what you experienced ..... not something I think we'll adopt here in Blighty though.

Yep, tank roundabout. As you said it really does need road markings, you can pretty much guarantee 9 times out of 10, someone will try cutting you up there.

From the Highway Code
Quote
186

Signals and position.

When taking the first exit to the left, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise

    * signal left and approach in the left-hand lane
    * keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave

When taking an exit to the right or going full circle, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise

    * signal right and approach in the right-hand lane
    * keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
    * signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want

When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise

    * select the appropriate lane on approach to the roundabout
    * you should not normally need to signal on approach
    * stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
    * signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want

When there are more than three lanes at the entrance to a roundabout, use the most appropriate lane on approach and through it.

There is no hard and fast rule about 12 o'clock or otherwise.  It depends on the number of exits, if the second exit of 3 is past 12 I would still take the inside lane.  As to who was right is your situation, it would depend on number of exits (your map points at a road so I can't tell myself) and the road markings.
