It wouldn't matter how many arrows you paint on the road a-holes still do as the please.
and for those that go straight over rather than round or cut your into your lane, driving a truck solves that problem flatten the muppets ;D ;D ;D.
I was taught exit 1 and 2 keep to the left unless otherwise marked exits 3+ use righthand lane unless otherwise marked :)

I found out recently that on any roundabout the Spanish are taught to stay in the inside lane without indicating until they get to their exit and then indicate.

that explains the number of accidents we see on roundabouts here. One roundabout in Granada I have nicknamed the worse roundabout in the world. It
serves a motorway on and off, varies in size from 2 to 5 lanes and has in total NINE roads on or off (most are dual carriageways). Most Spanish cars aren't even equipped with indicators.

Signals and position.

When taking the first exit to the left, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise

    * signal left and approach in the left-hand lane
    * keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave

When taking an exit to the right or going full circle, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise

    * signal right and approach in the right-hand lane
    * keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
    * signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want

When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise

    * select the appropriate lane on approach to the roundabout
    * you should not normally need to signal on approach
    * stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
    * signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want

When there are more than three lanes at the entrance to a roundabout, use the most appropriate lane on approach and through it.

There is no hard and fast rule about 12 o'clock or otherwise.  It depends on the number of exits, if the second exit of 3 is past 12 I would still take the inside lane.  As to who was right is your situation, it would depend on number of exits (your map points at a road so I can't tell myself) and the road markings.
I was always taught, look at a roundabout like a clockface if it's past twelve o'clock then use the right lane. If we take the clock out of the occasion then the exit is to the right, and as the highway code says if it's right then indicate right and approach in the right hand lane. So I am in the right  :P Oh and I know there is no malarky about 12 o'clock but it's pretty much the same as saying if the exit is to the right then use the right hand lane.

The code ambiguous here, how many exits are on the roundabout in question?  The 'when going to the right' bit sounds like it could only apply to 2 exit roundabouts.  I was never taught about clock faces, always about number of exits.  In fact on my first driving test I took a roundabout with 2 exits both of which were before 12 o'clock.  I was told to take the second exit, which I did, but I took the left hand lane which would be right by your clock face thing.  I failed on that.

Additionally if you want to see some real willys on roundabouts go round a few on a push-bike.

I my yoof I went around L'Etoile on my push-bike.  I only crashed once in Paris and it was when a pedestrian walked out in front of me.  It may be chaos but it works  :y

We have a couple of great roundabouts, first is marked to use the left lane to take the 3rd exit which is well past 12 o'clock. The right hand lane is marked for only the 3 o'clock exit which is used the least.

Second r/b has 3 entry lanes and only 2 exits, and both exits are single carraigeway, this is the same for all approach and exit roads, figure that one out.

I used to travel from Pompey to here & back when the M3 was extended to meet up with the M27. We used to pick up te A34 around there somewhere. What nightmare journies they used to be, they took ages & we tried just about every imaginable to avoid the road works ..... along with everyone who had the same idea  ;D
