We removed, checked, and re-set the points, and she fired on the first turn of the key  :y

It's a lost art  ;D

Even my 1982 MkI Astra had distributorless ignition system! early version of the modern DIS, an electronic unit that seats on the camshaft where the good old dizzy used to live. Last time I set the points on a car was on my 1979 Alfa Romeo...

I can still set most by eye to a reasonable level of accuracy.....but thats because I used to own a Fiesta!

I used to have a 1978 hatch with electronic ignition - I hate points.

The distributer used magnetic pulses instead

Not sure im to happy about that to be honest cos it dates me!!! glad you got it fixed bud, back in the days of points ignition it was a very common breakdown, youm learnt to always carry a few basic tools for just such an emergency but hey you couldnt fix a breakdown so easy on new cars!! cos if it didnt have a spark you was wasted ;D

I'm too young to know about points  :P

I had a Yamaha 125 with points once, every year, at MOT time, I always asked MOT place to replace them (one of these old fashioned places, give them a little work, and they were less critical on the MOT, eg change a blown bulb rather than fail it)...
