Cant be as bad as my mate who found some rust under his kawasaki gt 750`s fuel tank and used a wire bush to clean it up....Only for some small holes to open up and fuel start peeing out all over the place......I told him it might be wise to put his fag out... ::) ::) ::)

Sorry to dissapoint you Bertie but a lit fag won't ignite petrol  :y

I beg to differ!! I seen it happen, in Demolition Man, threw his fag on the floor and BOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM. Simon Pheonix (Wesley Snipes with the bleached hair) did it. If he can do it anyone can. ::) ::) ::) ::)

No something definatly went 'pop' under the tank, but the fuse did go as well.  I tried another fuse but it went straight away....

The coil crossed my mind, guess the tanks coming off........ ::) ::) ::)
On my Triumph Sprint ST the wiring loom that comes out from under the tank and up to the instruments is also connected to the handlebar switches and ignition switch. Every time I turn the bars the wiring loom flexes and rubs against a bracket that supports the radiator.

In my case the bracket wore through the insulation and took out the sidelights, tail light and instrument lights.

I'm guessing that the first wire to wear through on your wiring loom was the ignition circuit.

If that's a pre-2005 model then you also have a ground wire to the left bars that likes to break after 'n' turns of the steering and kills the starter and the horn!  Had that one yet? :D

Thanks for the answers, especially the advice re: fags and petrol.... :y

I've taken the tank off and had a good poke around hoping to see some molten plastic, but it all looks OK from a visual point of view :-/

The strange thing is that its now turning over fine and not blowing the fuse!  I need to check if there's a spark, but I don't have a plug socket that fits! I'll see if I can find an old sparkplug.....

That's exactly the behaviour I would expect if it's a chafed wire.  You can 'fix' the fault for quite some time by that method - trouble is it then comes back when you're in the Scottish Highlands, at night, in the pouring rain!

If you have a supply of fuses, your best bet now might be to crank the bike and delicately wiggle the wires until the fuse blows then examine the (small) area you were moving.  You might want safety goggles too!
