If the plates were bought from Ireland it's legal.

That's where I got mine from, not ebay though.
All legal fonts and spacing, just wanted a Vx logo on the side.

Also got some cheapo one's from ebay, based in Scotland.

Neither asked for proof of ownership.

I can concurr with Di on this, bought some plates FRIDAY from e-bay for my new private plate, no i.d.or proof of ownership asked for, recieved them today in the post. Good service, but strictly speaking illegal??

thankfully, now that "new labour" has bitten the dust, we should see the last of this sort of nonsense.

it was sort of "think of an idea for something you'd like to stop - rush out poor legislation that controls everyone apart from the ones that you really want to stop. Cost everyone a lot of money. increase the state's database of individuals information"

I've bought quite a few number plates off ebay-they may not be legal but there is never a problem at MOT time and two for a tenner is great.

Me too mate, nothing wrong with them

Correct fonts, spacing and size....no problem at all

My corsa came with illegal plates on, wrong font, wrong spacing, and one of the previous owners names written below the reg.  I argued with the woman who sold it to me - it added to the points I pulled the car up on to knock the price down, knowing that £30 would be the cost to replace.
Then, I went on eBay and ordered a set for a tenner.  Thing is, if your car is ancient (like my Corsa) then how does anyone know when they were replaced?  As long as there's a BS (british standard, not bull...t)number (forget which one) then I don't think there's any bother.

It's a pet hate of mine.  I don't understand why the ANPR cameras aren't dishing out hundreds of fines a day.  It's not difficult - right font, right spacing.  It's patently obvious when it's wrong.  It's the law.  99% of people manage, yet I could be well into double figures of 'offenders' every day if I bothered to count them.

..... It's not difficult - right font,  ......

But if you have a car from berfore AB12 CDE format they were a different font, a font that you can't strictly get done anymore.  :-?

Learn something new every day :)

Still, there's a ridiculous number of people running about with swirly fonts, or deliberately squared numbers to make them look like letters etc.

Anyway, I'll climb off the soapbox - especially since what I thought I knew I don't  :-[
