The 911 rear spoiler is usefull, as well as making an ugly car look nicer it makes good as a picnic table.   :-/

but why do people insist on putting them on the later shape beetle??

So they know which is the front & which is the rear :y

i dont like how we are stereotyping people who own/like modified cars as chavs... im into modified cars, my mig is modified, but im far from being a chav... agreed that spoilers dont look good on everything.... and that they are useless unless you are able to get more than a ton 40 out of you are car (not to hard to do in the mod car scene) but they do look good on the right car. each to their own i guess  :-/

show us your burberry cap.  ;D

You could allways build your own "discreet" souilers.

Some have a use. For example, I reckon Martin Imber does his ironing on that surfboard he has attached to his boot....

Just for the record......

(Don't know how to reproduce this from another article, but it's from the British Motorsport Assn, so will put it in quote marks)

" After much investigation, with the exception of a very few cars that are inherrantly unstable at low speeds due to their bodywork design, NO rear spoiler/wing/aerofoil device has any real benefit or function until the vehicle reaches over 150 mph, however they are mostly fitted by the General motor industry to add form or design curves to their "sporty" cars, without any aerodynamic benefit whatsoever."

I'm no expert in aerodynamics so any on this forum who know more about it will probably shoot me down in flames, but here are my thoughts...

What people are referring to as 'wings' are intended to create down-force and give more grip so a car can go through a corner faster. When used in their proper context, of course!

The 'lip' type spoilers on the Omegas and Audi TTs (and on the Cavalier GSi) are just that, spoilers. It is meant to 'spoil' the airflow over the back part of the car. I think this is to prevent or delay the formation of vortices directly at the back of the car which cause drag.

In the case of the TT didn't they find that the back of the car was generating lift above certain speeds? The addition of the spoiler in this case was to prevent the generation of lift rather than to produce down-force.

I thought my first mig was more wayward WITHOUT a spoiler than my second WITH one on the motorway at speed.

Guess what - spoiler was indifferent, however my suspension was knackered, no wonder!! haha.
