Dunkirk!
« on: 30 May 2010, 21:17:15 »

I have been flicking through the telly progs this evening and I would have thought at least there would be a programme about Dunkirk! I found one and it only lasted a half hour (BB bloody C). The rest of the channel programmes including TG were about Africa!! WTF?? Are we going to be brainwashed in the future about Africa and their ways??. Before anybody replys about me not ever being in Africa, I have worked all over the continent since 1993.  8-)

Radio 5 had hours of memories, interviews and reports from Dunkirk on the anniversary, i think BBC had live coverage of the flotilla on the day too. Make no mistake, no one in the UK will ever forget the heroism of ordinary folk on that day  :y

So did BBC South East with tremendous coverage :y :y :y

Great Britain had the luck with that operation, or some would say fate, to come away with some form of army to carry on the good fight for future days.  Brave, but very frightened men, who we should never forget, along with all those who would also give their lives at home and abroad in a fight against tyranny.

The many 70th anniversaries to come over the following years should remind the younger generations of the great sacrifice and how finally it produced a magnificent victory against evil.

We will always remember them!

My dad was fighting through France and ended up in hospital in Brussels in Belgium. They patched him up and he finished the war in Germany. A very lucky man to survive.  :y

Brilliant photos. Thanks for posting them. My father escaped at Dunkirk, with the 5th Btn Q.O.R.W.K. My father-in-law was in the Bucks Btn if the Ox & Bucks Lt Infantry, who fought as rearguards at the battle of Hazebrouck. They were a terrier btn., with very few heavy weapons, yet held out for two days against Panzer, air, and ground artillery. He was shot in both legs trying to escape at the end of the battle, lost one leg, and spent 3 yrs as a POW, repatriated in '43. A very brave man, and one of my heroes.

He was lucky to survive at all S , and only because he wasn't taken by the SS units in the area who almost without exception did not take prisoners, but instead perpetrated the most appalling murder & barbarity on those unfortunates who fell into their hands! >:( Those blokes in the Rear Guard knew they had the short straw & fully expected to pay the 'Ultimate Price' to allow the rest time to escape, but they also expected & were entitled to fair treatment under the 'Rules of War' when they were finally overrun and found themselves 'lucky enough to be still alive'!  >:(  Yes, they will all be remembered and their memories honoured as will those of every other Soldier, Sailor or Airman who put themselves in harms way both in the Past, Present & Future. And I of course include the Female members of the Armed Forces too . God Bless Them All  :y

Thanks Phil, and Amen to that. :y

Incidentally, for anyone in the area, the Royal Green Jackets Museum at Peninsula Barracks, Winchester have a special exhibition relating to the Battle of Hazebrouck on at present which closes on the 5th June. It is very well done, and Peninsula Barracks has other interesting military museums.
