Tyre Pressures and MPG
« on: 03 June 2010, 21:30:44 »

Basicaly my Elte had been stood since November, used it once in the last week of December and put a pull tank of fuel in and set all tyre pressures to 35psi at the garage where I filled up.  Did 51 miles that day trying to put some charge in the battery but had to turn arround and go home as the OSF brakes went metal to metal (Corroded after being stood didnt help).

Next time I went out, flat battery and flat OSR tyre. so left it.  As the weather warmed bought a smart charger and put a full charge in the battery over 3 days as it was disconected at night.  Pumped up the tyre and tootled off on a 30 mile round trip to get the brakes done, then nipped out and did another 20 miles that night taking the trip to 101 miles.

Few days later, reset the to do a little favour and added annother 41 miles.

Did a tank top up (not full) adding £60 fuel and recked it would have taked annother fiver to brim it, So £65 div by 142 miles the naff.

Been out and taxed the car and checked the tyre pressures at my normal garage.  ( donr forget I had blown up a flat tyre but only used a portable battery /pump)

OSF 40 PSI
NSF 30 PSI
NSR 25 PSI
OSR 20 PSI

Now when i set off I visually checked the osr as I believe it to need resealing or has a slow pucture (Has been like this for ages) and TBH it looked as inflated as the rest.

Allthough I hardly use the car at the moment they havent been checked, but when I do they are checked weekly/forrnightly depending on ammount of use.

Now I knew the binding disk hadnt helped MPG, but was staggered in the difference betweem airline pressures.  I know I have losses in the rears (Both) front seem hit and miss, but to see one of them over 5 PSI higher from another airline is ridiculous,

I know they should be checked cold but you cant do that if travelling to a garage so my questions are.

What tyre peresuures should I set them at after driving to a garage,

Plus what tyre presuures should should they be when cold based on MDTM findings on his runs to work (Cant find it but wanted to corfirm the pressures)

Can anyone recommend a portable/pocket Tyre pressure gauge to keep in the car that will give accurate readings on a constant basis.

Car has that brand new feel to it again using this pump at he garage today, and allthought it felt the same in December it possibly over inflated the PSi, or maybe the one today has underinflated them, but I dont have a standard to judge it by.

TIA  :y

I run my Migs with 35 rear and 33 front.

(Rears will be 37 now, with added weight of LPG tank).

Is just what I've found works well for me  :y

NOT - from what I have seen at the garages, hence wanting a good tyre guage to check myself.

I run 35psi all round,it seems to be a personal choice thing (within sensible limits).I never use garage gauges, I have a little digital gauge, cost about a tenner from Hellfrauds. Guaranteed accurate within 1psi.

I find my rears wear in the centre however low I run them. On 30 currently, IIRC. Put a few more pounds in if it's going on a long cruise. 32 on the front seems to work OK.

Hmm new tyres on today. Must check pressures.

Mine seems happy at 35psi, I either trundle round the village lanes or pootle up to the speed limits.

My trips to a friemds over the open twisty county side with an empty boot I drive it like I have just solen it to strech its legs.  few long stretches, few big sweepinf bends and a few tight twisty's

Would love a lancia Y10 withe the 3.0 in it but then I would have been banned and locked up mow, but as the Omega ia a big wallowy old hector it gives me great delight in sneaking up on some of the cars that the driver doesnt think I stand a chance against and thrashing then while they were catching breath.

Cem, I tems to go the other way, I drop my tyre pesuures for winter, but if the snow carries on in the future as it did this year I night get a ser of mus and snow tyres, or if still on road tyres then I drop the PSI for better drip.

Tyre pressure should be around 2.2 bar  (32 psi I think) semi loaded car if you are checking when the tyre is cold.
If you check them after a run values should be higher than that cause air expands as it gets warmer.
