On another forum for my classic car club, the gen chat had spiralled out of control (a lot worse then here!). After a meeting of the big chiefs a few changes were decided upon. They tightened down the rules, especially on gen. chat, to include no swearing, no racism, etc. and the addition of 4 moderators (making the total 2 admins and 6 moderators) to strictly monitor the whole forum and remove inappropriate items. OK there were a few members that weren't happy as they'd joined during the rough time and didn't like the new stricter rules, some left and some straightened up, but it was such a nice place to be again, as it had been before.
Thankyou Welung666, that about sums it up

Lets be frank for a moment. Those that know me will say I swear far too much, particulalry when the rage sets in. I'm sure you do. I sure the kids do (I certainly did, knowing I'd get a clout from Dad when he heard, despite his bad language).
The problem lies in where that line is drawn. Is bloody OK, but the F word inappropriate? Then there is the C word? What about calling somebody a W4NKA (I want that registration!)?
OK, so we have big, long discussions about what (known) language is acceptable here, and maybe even possibly keep up with new words. Then, what about discussing where to draw the line on other subjects - racism, sexism, the symantecs of religious beliefs and the things done in the name of those beliefs? Then what about all the other things I haven't mentioned or thought of?
The fact is, if you police for every eventuality, you end up with a rulebook as twisted and unworkable as UK case Law.
Remember, we have legal responsibilities as an entity, and recent case law has made us have to be more vigilant.
We are a global site, although our core is UK members, we have many members from both North and South America, Western Europe, Eastern Bloc, Scandanavia, Middle East, Africa etc, all with different beliefs, views, cultures. Please be aware that your audience is a global cross-section of people before you speak.
The forum rules, you will notice, are called Guidelines, not Rules. They are there to give *ALL* members a feel for the kind of behaviour that is acceptable, not a conclusive list of rights and wrongs. I had hoped that we were all intelligent enough to be able to look at those guidelines and act accordingly.
So, as I see it, we have 3 alternatives:
1) Obey the 'OOF Spirit', and the spirit of the guidelines. Return to our old light touch moderation, relying on our members to act responsibly.
2) Enforce the spirit of the guidelines. Moderate heavily, relying on the moderators to give up yet more of their time to run this
FREE site, purely out of the goodness of their hearts.
3) Give up. If we want a free-for-all, I can happily recommend other Vauxhall sites, and that will save the Admin Team the hassle, time and expense of running OOF.
This is only a choice 'OOF' as a whole can make.
