LOL!

If people are worried about what their children see on OOF, then keep them away from the TV... Geez, keep them away from the Playground.

If I were to write my full list of 'naughty' words in this post, I'd wager the average 8 year old could add to it.

I agree to a certain level of censorship, but only on the merit of decorum, not because my 6yr old might go to school and say the word ''dangle berries''.  Afterall, he hears that everytime I work on the car.

Some people need to understand that we live in a real world, and not on the interweb.

if the BBC acted on every complaint recieved there would bo nothing to broadcast. Not all complaints are justified, some might even complain for personal gain in other walks of life.
Personaly i think the forum is being massively over policed. Its become sterile and dull as a result, and when other admins have to watch what they say i fear the worst.
There seems to be a level of hypocracy or a divide in the party line, on the one hand we watch our p's and q's, take the moral high ground, a dim view etc, on the other let rip assuming we are gods gift and above it all. Nobody, but nobody gets it right all the time, we know it, yet here we wingeing on, giving out the rights and wrongs to everyone else. Human nature, deal with it or go away.

Yes there will always be KW's in the world, and always the over officious, but you cant move forward in an ivory tower, only cut your self off from the outside world. Seems to me anyway. Get involved more and join in rather than lording above us, make your point by example i suppose?

Nothing of interst to me in general chat as a rule, bin it. No help going on.

2pence worth. :-/

Blimey... Have 10 days or so of only being able to pop in and look what happens! :o :o :o

As I have said in the past, I don't think OOF is broken. But it was/is a little unwell and we all (and yes, I include myself, admins... Every member) make mistakes/post something a little inappropriate. We just need to (as has been said) think before we post.

TB, please think long and hard about the enormous decision you are contemplating and, if you can, hold off any drastic thoughts until after Newent as well... Then you can canvass other opinions too :y

As for members leaving... It's always sad to lose someone from any group but, TBH, there are times when you just have to think OK... Good Luck. KW and I had a few run ins over time because I felt he was sometimes a bit OTT but I was sad to see him get banned. Not surprised, but sad. STMO leaving (again!) is equally sad.

I have made some good friends through this site, some of whom I've never even met in person. Even SWMBO, although she wouldn't admit it(!), would be sad if this all went pear shaped. After the Essex meet we had 3 people come back to ours and stay the night... A cracking night it was too.  :y I would be very sad if OOF folded because people can't think before they post (and again I refer to all of us!)

Come on guys & gals... Lets put on our long trousers and act like grown ups! We used to have a laugh without upsetting people and the post count culls were always for funny reasons, not because of a serious reason. Perhaps another "Light Hearted" evening is required again, with some funny titles etc... That was a cracking evening's entertainment!

Anyway... I've just got in from a night shift and need my bed as I've got to go to North Yorkshire this afternoon/evening and help my mum take down a conservatory!

My absence lately has nothing to do with the content... Just other commitments getting in the way of OOF :'( :'( If things carry on the way they are (with said commitments) I'm going to need this place to pick me up again!

I try to stay as middle of the road as I can and as a result very rarely comment on this sort of thread, but I thought I'd just throw my opinion into the mix after a few hours digesting it all.

On another forum for my classic car club, the gen chat had spiralled out of control (a lot worse then here!). After a meeting of the big chiefs a few changes were decided upon. They tightened down the rules, especially on gen. chat, to include no swearing, no racism, etc. and the addition of 4 moderators (making the total 2 admins and 6 moderators) to strictly monitor the whole forum and remove inappropriate items. OK there were a few members that weren't happy as they'd joined during the rough time and didn't like the new stricter rules, some left and some straightened up, but it was such a nice place to be again, as it had been before. I really do understand TB's and the other admins/mods frustration.

I have met so many great people through the OOF and will remain firm friends for many years to come. There are some I haven't met but would still consider them good friends. I'd be lost without my (several) daily fix of the OOF.

And what would I do with the calendars I have left?  ;D

FFS dudes  get a grip  Its only an internet forum!!

If it closed down  there are plenty other forums on the internet.
I dont realy come on here for the car chat  infact the main reason for me visiting here is the chit chat from the regulars  including the likes of KW In general chat.

I do feel the OOF users should be able to self police after all we are all adults

I've been on 'other' sites & to be quite frank they are NOT a patch on OOF  >:(

I thoroughly enjoy coming on here for 'Help' & especially this Discussion Area & in my very short time i've been sent & replied to pm's  :y

So i'm sorry doog i don't agree with u in the slightest but there again that's my privilege  :P ;D
[/highlight]

Have to say, I am in full agreement with that! :y

Wow

Just read all this and am shocked

Like others have said, OOF isnt my life but I enjoy my time spent here and would miss it if it went.

Happy to pay a membership if asked to, even if we all paid a quid a year it would be over £8000 towards  the running of the site, that would maybe cover everything if its about money.......?

As for arguing, well, when we were in school (along time  ago!) we soon learnt that if we broke the rules there would be consequences to that, and we discovered it was far easier to just obey the rules.....

I think all the Mods do a top job to keep this site running, I dont think we all understand how demanding it can be for them, so sometimes I think they would be well within their rights to be a little bit stricter with repeat rule breakers and take control of the situation that has developed.

I am as guilty as the next guy for speaking my mind on here, and in turn I respect that others opinions sometimes are totally different to mine, isnt that what the world is about though.....

 :y
Its not about the money. Its never been about the money - running costs are something to concern members.  We started this place to be a free site from *ALL* Omega enthusiasts (irrespective of colour/creed/religion/nationality), any thats the way the Admin Team would like it to continue.

Thankyou Welung666, that about sums it up :y

Lets be frank for a moment.  Those that know me will say I swear far too much, particulalry when the rage sets in.  I'm sure you do. I sure the kids do (I certainly did, knowing I'd get a clout from Dad when he heard, despite his bad language).

The problem lies in where that line is drawn.  Is bloody OK, but the F word inappropriate? Then there is the C word? What about calling somebody a W4NKA (I want that registration!)?

OK, so we have big, long discussions about what (known) language is acceptable here, and maybe even possibly keep up with new words.  Then, what about discussing where to draw the line on other subjects - racism, sexism, the symantecs of religious beliefs and the things done in the name of those beliefs?  Then what about all the other things I haven't mentioned or thought of?

The fact is, if you police for every eventuality, you end up with a rulebook as twisted and unworkable as UK case Law.

Remember, we have legal responsibilities as an entity, and recent case law has made us have to be more vigilant.

We are a global site, although our core is UK members, we have many members from both North and South America, Western Europe, Eastern Bloc, Scandanavia, Middle East, Africa etc, all with different beliefs, views, cultures. Please be aware that your audience is a global cross-section of people before you speak.

The forum rules, you will notice, are called Guidelines, not Rules.  They are there to give *ALL* members a feel for the kind of behaviour that is acceptable, not a conclusive list of rights and wrongs.  I had hoped that we were all intelligent enough to be able to look at those guidelines and act accordingly.

So, as I see it, we have 3 alternatives:

1) Obey the 'OOF Spirit', and the spirit of the guidelines. Return to our old light touch moderation, relying on our members to act responsibly.

2) Enforce the spirit of the guidelines. Moderate heavily, relying on the moderators to give up yet more of their time to run this FREE site, purely out of the goodness of their hearts.

3) Give up. If we want a free-for-all, I can happily recommend other Vauxhall sites, and that will save the Admin Team the hassle, time and expense of running OOF.

This is only a choice 'OOF' as a whole can make.

Choice and return to the spirit of the OOF as many would remeber 18/24 months ago.

Swear words, they have/had allways been used tougue in cheek.
Bloody ia a word that is rather tame, but the F word and C word to me are complete nono's, I have used firking and fooking as i firk off and fooking good show in a way to lighten or boost a situation or a joke but would never dare consider the word as a whole or expletive on a negative way.

Sexism and racism light hearted jokes have allways recieved a good laugh and in good spirit were never really frowed upon, but recently they have become more hardcore.  Yes, I have told many sexist jokes, but I have told them in both directions.

I still feel Headers and Smileys make the difference, I allways post a NWS especially after the 1st complaint I recieved on a post, Dbug for example allways puts a funny smiley on his jokes.

Motorsport and soaps threads if they are refering to an outcome should have (SPOILER) in the title so as not to spoil the future for others.

I should add that my definition of racism/sexism/whateverism is not whether some weak-willed do-gooder could find fault with the comment, but whether I felt the comment was meant to cause offense.

For example, those cartoons in the press a couple of years ago depicting the prophet Mohammed were, imho, offensively racist/anti Islamic.  The old Englishman/Scotsman/Irishman type are not.

That is my one personal opinion, and my own morals, and may differ to that of the Admin Team as a whole.

Also, an element of lighter bad language could (and did) work with the light moderation if *EVERYONE* sticks to it.  Sadly, in the last year or so, we have had too many people try to push the limit, on the claim that they class their bad language as normal.

Totally agree, it's not that long since as I only joined March 2008 there was allways the the light hearted tongue in cheek bad language from the day I joined, but it has just got so intence of recent months even some of the older members seem to have grasped it and run with worse language as if the newer members are doing it then so will I attitude, which is quite sad really.
