Euston Arch Rebuild
« on: 09 June 2010, 14:38:48 »

On another thread I started to go into the sad affair of the loss of the Euston Arch in London during 1961/2, against many protests to preserve it when the then new Euston - 1960s monstrosity - station was to be built.  This was a great loss to part of London's railway history, and some thought it had gone forever.

However, there has been a big movement to rebuild the arch using 60% at least of the original that was discovered by an historian dumped to fill a hole in a London river!!:

Please read down through this link for details:
http://www.eustonarch.org/history.html#7

This is what the Euston Arch originally looked like when I was a child, but it was demolished in 1961/1962 - NOTE the cars; can you name them?? :

Now though as I have stated the intention is to rebuild the arch.  It is intended this will be done when eventually a new Euston Station is built:

.........................and this is the fantastic new vision for the rebuilt Euston Arch:

Well done Alf! :y :y :y  Although the Sunbeam is the one I am stuck on, as there were a few cars going around at the time that looked like those.  As for the Standard Vanguard, my driving instructor in 1970 still owned one of them.  A lovely car to ride in :-* :-* :-*

The other end of the line was in Birmingham and here is the our terminal.

Standing empty at the moment after a chequered history but rumoured to be the terminus for the proposed new High Speed Railway line.

Thanks DadUK1! :y :y :y

Lovely picture of a building I never knew existed.  You can certainly see the connection with the old Euston and in particular the Arch 8-) 8-)

Wouldn't it be great if it could be re-used for a new high speed line terminus, and down in London the Arch is rebuilt! :-* :-* :-*

Lizzie after years of standing derelict it was cleaned up  by I think the Princes Trust but alas it only short lived. It would be wonderful if it was restored, and the proposed Euston Arch looks a lot better than whats there at the moment!
