I don't think that the Labour Party/New Labour will be ready for a female leader of whatever colour for the foreseeable future.

There should be no reason for this - other than the quality of candidates available.  Gender, colour, religious affiliation or sexual orientation should not be an obstacle.

As far as Ms Abbott is concerned I don't think she has qualities necessary for that particular job even though politics in general seems to a male dominated profession - for whatever reason - there still shouldn't be the temptation to have a female on the list simply because of the gender issue.

Without starting me off again Richie, why not? ::) ::)

i cant see britain voting for a black african mp. stick her in a constituency outside london and she wouldnt even be in parliament. shes corrupt, wants britain as a multi cultural centrepiece, does nothing for anyone but her own race and she has the personality and charisma of a dead fish, and shes too ugly to be a p.m

.. Gordon Brown, John Major, Margaret Thatcher, etc. being good looking, in your opinion?  :o ;)

Not saying I agree with everything or, indeed, anything she stands for but, I think, compared to the other spineless yes-men who have put themselves forward, she is a refreshing change. Yes, she's a left winger but perhaps it'll lead Labour out of the centre "me, too" zone of politics and give voters some choice.

Just the Lib Dems and the Tories to sort out then. ;)

Whether she gets anywhere remains to be seen but good on her for trying.

And imo Obama is going to be a useless president. He is certainly doing serious damage to British pension funds atm. ;)
He is playing to the gallery to try to recover some of his popularity which is disappearing very fast in the U.S.

I agree A, I said some time ago that Barak Obama had the potential of being one of the most divisive Presidents in recent US history and judging by his current standing, many US citizens feel the same way.

I think he might have arrived, although it's taken him a bit longer than most US presidents. ;D

He always was one, the media circus which tried to convince us all he was the new messiah did a pretty good job of hiding it though.I predict many more major flaws in his character will become apparent as time goes by.
I labelled him the U.S. Tony Blair during his campaign and I see no reason so far, to change my mind. To be fair though, he is much further to the left than Blair. ;)

I'm confused about Diane Abbott.  I always disliked her and everything she stood for (or claimed she stood for).  As a Conservative voter, she originally symbolised everything I hated about the Labour party.

But after 13 years of New Labour, I find myself warming to her.  I am even beginning to admire the Beast of Bolsover and Tony Benn.  These people have principles, albeit principles I disagree with.  The remaining Labour Leadership candidates are simply sub-Blair clones.  Elect one of them, and it'll be just like Gordon Brown is still there.

Where is Gordon Brown anyway?  I'm really not missing him at all.

But I may well give up expressing opinions and retire to a monastery on a secluded island.  A couple of weeks ago, I watched Question Time.  One of the panellist expressed a series of opinions with which I concurred entirely - in fact, I had explicitly said the same things here on this forum.  To my shame, that panellist was Kelvim McKenzie.   :( :( :(

I really do like your style of writing J,it always brings a smle to my face. :y :)
I do agree about the names you mentioned, they didnt believe in the New Labour project and refused to join in as a career move. Cant think of anything else good to say about them though. ;)

Without doubt - I loved those sultry sideways glances she used to give to the assembled hacks as she walked into 10 Downing Street :-* :-* :-*
