Out of all the film clips that are available showing the B17 in action, and at times very sadly, being shot up and going down with their crews to join the other 30,000 of the American Eighth Army Air Force casualities  :'( :'( :'( :'(, I thought I just remind ourselves of its now more peacful existence:

................and for those interested in actual war footage, that shows what happened to so many of those poor souls flying B17's during the suicidal daylight bombing raids over Germany:

What is not widely known is that their payload is similar to that of the Mosquito.

Indeed Martin, with a maximum 6,000lb for long distance bombing missions, although it could carry 17,600lb for shortmissions.

The supreme Lancaster could carry 14,000 on long haul missions, but a maximum of 22,000lb on short missions.

Hence the RAF from 1939 - 1945 (Lancaster operational March 1942)dropped 955,044 tons on Germany, whilst the USAAF , Eighth Army, dropped 621,877 tons from August-1942 to 1945.

Memphis Belle is a film well worth watching.....filmed at Binbrook where I go now most days with my job

Special effects on MB look dated now, but a really good movie that brings home a little of the horrors of what the B17 crews went through

I agree M! :y :y

The scene where the MB co-pilot goes to the rear, mans a gun and shoots down an Focker Wolfe 190 (D-9 I think), only to see the German plane fall and slice through the tail of another B17, manned by a brand new young crew.  The sounds of the stricken crew, and the sight of the remains of the stricken B17 is very haunting. :'( :'(

For anyone who has not seen it, here it is, after about 2.26 mins in:
