And what happens when there's no wind, as during the coldest spell last winter? And where exactly are we to find the billions of pounds to pay for these idiotic eyesores?

I hate Wind Turbines, they look awful and cause all kinds of health problems, they kill birds and bats, look awful don't work overly much during the summer are the most expensive form of energy generation there is....

They are so good that the Scandinavian countries had stopped using them as they are so inefficient....

Me too, I can see 8 of the things from the top of my drive and throughout the summer seem to be still more often than not.

Within 1/2 a mile away I can see about 30 of them all around me...  Of course when they are working, they can't just turn the Gas Power stations off, they have to be ready to roll in case the wind stops turning the blades... 

They talk about hydroelectric, but, the way they want to do it is by effectively damming or putting booms across the rivers...  Why they don't look at how Hydro power has been used in the past I have no ide, they just want to cause ecological damage by the way they act!!!!   
I honestly would prefer a Nuclear Power Station in my neighbourhood than Wind Turbines...  How anyone can say the are ecological is beyond me, with how they look and the amount of concrete they pump into the ground to support them on... 

I'll try to get off my high horse now.... lol...

I think they're beautiful, majestic and modern - i don't know what all the fuss is about - cheap, renewable energy 

oh, and they kill birds? "in the UK, we have not so far witnessed any major adverse effects on birds associated with wind farms". RSPB 2004 - i'm not aware they've changed their position since  8-)

Of course, I expect to be pilloried for posting on this subject, because it's "boring", but surely anyone can see that this push for a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions within 10 years will not be achieved by these wretched windmills, since they provide so little power it's laughable. No, it could only be achieved if the government cracks down hard - and I mean very hard - on things like motoring, flying and manufacturing.

So, in ten years' time, driving will become so expensive that you simply won't be able to afford to work further than a bus-ride from home. You won't be able to fly away on holiday each year, it will a luxury to get away once in every 5 years, it'll be so expensive. As for manufacturing, the burden of energy cost will become so great that what's left of our industry will leave these shores for India and China.

And will it have any effect on climate? No.

But, yes, it is boring, so I apologise for posting about it.

When the wind blows of course BJ and I suppose one would be obliged to disregard the development, construction and maintenance costs to consider the energy they produce as being cheap.

Naturally, energy that's 'cheap' to produce doesn't necessarily mean that it will remain so for the consumer.

I've always had my doubts about the economic viabilty of wind farms. I have one about two miles from me in Liverpool bay on Burbo Bank. Which it has just been discovered some turbines are starting to fall over  and the bill to put them right is going to run into millions

This is just what we need to get us out of recession, of course. To commit ourselves to a load of spending for zero gain in the hope that it might just be us who manufacture the white elephants wind farms. Yeah, right.

The environment will still be there in 5 - 10 years when the recession is over and our debt burden has eased. Let's forget about it until then and concentrate on getting out of this mess whilst still maintaining the things that matter - feeding the poor, healing the sick and educating the kids.

Lets go back to sending people underground to hew out coal to create electricity. That would get unemployement down. We could also buy obsolete power station technology from East European countries, that would save a few bob.

For my two penworth, lets build the Severn Barrage and show the world Britain is as good today at engineering as the Victorians were.

True, But no pain no gain. The birds would just go elsewhere or we could create a new habitat (Morecombe Bay?) Nuclear power is the only way forward for a society not wishing to reduce its dependence on gadgets and consumption. Needs the waste aspect tackling though.
